I can understand and pick up spoken-Japanese relatively well, but still far away from the level of fluency required to hold a proper conversation. The written stuff (except for the romanized forms) I also still don't handle except for some characters and words. DESU, for the most part, I've learned the language from Anime, which isn't necessarily the best way for this purpose. At least not for grammar, although it helps with pronunciation and listening skills. I still need subtitles for the most part, although I've already watched some Anime stuff without (or without understandable subtitles) them and could still get what's said just by been able to pick up more than a handful of familiar words. Catching words is a bit more difficult with longer sentences and sometimes also due to specific character-voices, or external sounds, though.

wrong. its not as if pausers pause every line (then it would take 3 hours rather than 30 minutes). for everyone who's not already advanced and not watching baby anime, there are things you can understand instantly at your current level and things you can't. the things you can't won't magically become comprehensible if you don't pause. you just won't understand it. and that'll keep happening over and over no matter how many times you skip those lines until you learn all or most of the words you don't know and get familiar enough with the words or phrases you didn't know well enough to catch at full speed. full comprehension of everything that was said in the show without pausing will not happen before that point no matter how much you try to fool yourself.
