I have trouble understanding this sentence

お客さんの 会社へ 向かう と中、行列ができている カフェを 見つけました

basically it's like "while I was going to the office I found a cafe with a line of customers, right.
but the sentence starts like "customers.... while I was going to the office..... I saw a line of them by the cafe"
it's weird

I’ve been studying Japanese off and own for almost a year, but I feel like I’m reaching a plateau where I need to actually read more in order to improve.

I’m currently level 14 in Wanikani and around 75% though the N5 grammar in Bunpro. I also actively study N5 audio practice videos on YouTube and passively listen to NHK podcasts while I’m at work.

Between wanikani and bunpro, I feel like I know enough individual words and at least some basic grammar points in isolation, but whenever I try to work on reading comprehension, it’s painfully slow and awful. With reading, it’s like all the individual things I know fly out of my brain, and I end up plugging entire sentences into google translate to figure out what it says.

I think part of the problem is that I’m having trouble finding reading material that’s at my grammar level. It feels like everything is either painfully basic/easy or way beyond my level, nothing in between. However, I also think I keep trying to convince myself that reading comprehension will just magically get easy if I keep learning grammar points and kanji through Bunpro and wanikani.

TLDR: I’m sure it’s not possible to improve reading comprehension through SRS apps alone, but it seems like there ought to be less painful beginner reading materials that don’t make reading feel like pulling teeth :( please let me know if you know of any good resources or tips for making reading practice easier.

>I end up plugging entire sentences into google translate to figure out what it says.
Jesus don't do that. Isolate the words you don't understand and look them up in a Japanese dictionary. Never use google translate, if you can't work out the meaning quickly then you aren't meant to understand the sentence yet so you should just skip it.
Once you let go of the idea that you need to understand every sentence in order to read you're gonna have much more fun. I forget where I heard it but there was a guy who saw a young girl holding Moby Dick and when he asked her if it was too hard for her she said "I just skip the parts I don't understand". That's how you should be reading Japanese.
Like you I felt reading to be an absolute chore but once you find something that is relatively close to your level but still engaging to you then you've struck gold. If you're enjoying the story for the stories sake rather than "Is this improving my Japanese?" then the grind fades into the background and you're just left with enjoyable content and subconscious learning.
Keep in mind this is all the blind leading the blind. I use different tools for vocab/grammar than you are so I can't compare my current level directly but I am very likely "below" you.

Assuming "too hard" means you can understand a word or two at best and would need to research 3+ words/grammar points, just skip it.
You obviously won't improve from that once sentence, but you wouldn't have improved from spending 5 minutes dissecting it either. Your time is better spent reading more sentences for the ones that you can almost understand and have to look up 1 at most 2 words/grammar points or better yet you can fill in the gaps with a guess from the context.

Tae kim is fine. It should be the first and the last textbook you read. But don't study it. Go through it attentively, don't bother memorizing anything, just refer back to it as a grammar reference when needed. And then start reading, just use yomichan. Once you get a hang of grammar, reduce your yomichan usage.

Sentence mining is fine, but optional. But it's probably not useful for beginners. Don't bother with premade decks. You'll learn to most basic words and grammar at yhe same time more effectively just by reading.

Learning kanji in isolation is a pure waste of time. If you absolutely have to learn how to write, then learn it after you're fluent, just like themselves.

is this how you started? read through tae kim then just dove right into reading? what did you start with? where you looking up every single word? what "level" would you say you are at now? how long have you been reading?
I've been following this pic and I was under the impression that I would need a very basic vocab knowledge in order to start reading. I'm currently going through the Tango N5 deck as well as reading Yotsuba and watching cute SoL stuff with jpn subs. It takes about 30 mins to go through my anki reps currently which is fine since I have unlimited free time atm but that is soon to change and inevitably this will dig into my reading/watching time then.

I understand your problem. After learning the kana and doing TK I had difficulty reading most stuff, so I lost interest, gave up, only to come back later. And was basically "learning" on and off, I tried Anki but I would always give up after a few days. Manga was a pain to read since you can't just select words and paste them into a dictionary. And most other content was either artificial or boring.

At a certain point I simply couldn't care about learning Japanese anymore and started reading what I wanted to read, in this case the WN of 転生したら剣でした (aka sword dad). It's written in a very simple manner. I'd abuse the shit out of yomichan, trying to understand as much as a could, doing only basic grammar lookups if needed, and ignoring anything that was too difficult or would take too much time to decipher, in the hope that at the very least this would still be better than MTL.
To my surprise after a while I started to get a natural feel for basic Japanese grammar and could understand basic words without yomichan. After that I started being more attentive about my yomichan usage because at a certain point it will become a crutch. And my understanding of japanese improved steadily. Eventually I removed yomichan.

At this point I can read most WN trash, I can go without having to look up anything for multiple paragraphs to 1~2 things per paragrap depending on the difficulty.

I started doing this maybe 1-2 years ago and read pretty much every day. You could probably be faster than me since I'm lazy and overused yomichan too much. But the great thing about this method was that I was having fun and was doing stuff I would be doing if I could already read jap instead of staying in the safety of tutorial island of boring artificial content or Anki grinding.

You see, the only way to get better at reading is by reading. Your brain isn't a a computer that will input japanese into an algorithm and does database lookups. No amount of anki grinding will help if you don't have a feel for japanese. So first you have to cultivate that feel. However most content is either too hard or too artificial for a beginner, but by abusing yomichan you can lower that difficulty significantly, ignoring vocab and only having to focus on cultivating that feel. And you'll still get some vocab for free.

It's not like I think Anki cards would be completely useless, but the most common words and grammar are so common you don't need Anki for them.
Anki could be useful for those words where you're like "I know I've looked this word up before more than once, but I still can't remember it.". And for words that you only see once or twice, they're probably not worth remembering as an intermediate learner. Still, I'm to lazy for Anki and I still improve.

jesus that sounds like pulling teeth, 50+ cards per episode is 2+ cards per minute of anime. how can you stomach that? how long have you been doing it?
from what I have read on the anime vocab sentence mining method you should only be making cards for the i+1 stuff, so sentences where you understand almost everything there already but there is just 1 other piece of vocab/grammar that you aren't getting.
the idea being that anything more complex isn't going to stick well anyway so there is no need to force yourself to memorize it before your level is ready.
i'm assuming you're doing sentence cards right? not individual vocab. like the ones the animecards guy suggests.

It's ridiculously vague for starters. "Internet-forum sites" like this one contain vocabulary for a ridiculous amount of content. I'm confident I don't know every piece of english vocab used here, nobody does because everyone has their own interests that their vocabulary caters to. If not then they can pick up new words very quickly from context mainly and looking them up if they really care.
The kicker is all the shit it treats as separate words. So in reality count every verb they class as a "word" and divide it by what, 4? 6? They are purposely making it look much harder than it is.

there are different word structures in different languages man, sometimes the verb/noun distinction matters less than the root or the word, not in the etymological sense, but in more of the basic form of a word
its easier to see in japanese with kanji, but it's extensively studied in my mother tongue, so root form comes before verb/noun, then you decide on first/second/3rd person, then you decide on gender, and then you decide on time
a little simpler in japanese but point still stands

Okay guys so I just started learning this language because reasons. After checking the guide I followed these steps:

1. Got the Kana down.
2. Started reading Tae Kim.
3. Set up Anki with Core2K as suggested by the guide.

I expected to pick up some easy words and learn some kanji along the way and I'm instantly presented with pic related.

First batch of words include fucking enormous and confusing Kanji (some words have 3 of them) and this thing expect me to recognize and remember them? Some words in the first 20:
>洋間: Western-style room
>敬語: Honorific language
>年賀: New Year's card (are you fucking kidding me?)

Is this supposed to be intuitive for learning core words? I mean I expected something like numbers, colors, or whatever. Is the whole guide a meme?

I did RTK1 ~3 years ago. I don't have even n5 but I do have 5000 hours of reading Japanese and coincidentally every time I visit this sub and see threads like this I do look back and wonder where would I be if I didn't do it. Just for the record, I read Japanese like it's my native nowadays. And I've been satisfied with my general ability for last 1.5 years.

And the reason I do wonder and RTK is because back when I did it, there were 2 general reasons I did it that maybe aren't most valid for everyone. I tried to just read and learn as I go with vocab for about 2 months and I had 2 issues. First, I wanted to read things where copy-paste into a dictionary was not an option so it was extreme pain in the ass to even look up how to read words and RTK surprisingly solves that issue because you can just type english word into jisho.org and kanji pops up and from there you can look up the wor so I think if I turned back time I would do RTK again just for that. But it's more of a personal issue, if I would enjoy reading different things, like light novels in browser or NHK news or something where you can just copy pasta Kanji into dictionary or even better, use some software like yomichan, that would not be needed.

started learning last week. i've got my kana down pretty good so i've been reading yotsuba&. thanks to years of anime I can understand about 90% of it and it's so good and funny. i'm really enjoying it. i'm glad i'm able to get a taste of how satisfying it is to read and understand manga so early. really makes me feel motivated
