Last thread we made good progress and had even more links to tutorials. We should get to compiling a list of those helpful links. Also someone is apparently working on a remake of The Story of Eastern Wonderland, and another is spinning a tale of Kaguya hosting Mokou in her mansion, at least for a short while.

Don't be discouraged to start on something even if you lack the skills to do it. Try to finish up previous works if you can, just for the practice. Use this thread as a starting point for developing or improving your abilities. Don't wait or procrastinate if you want to do something, get working now.

Keep your trolling to a minimum, lest you feel EX-Keine's penis upon your buttcheeks.

Nothing is wrong with fanfiction.

The world cannot be made worse by fanfiction. If it's good, we all benefit. If it's bad, nobody gets hurt. If it's so bad that it's hilariously awful, we all benefit yet again.

The best method is to start short: think of a simple idea for a very short story (a few pages) and go with it. From there, you can go to larger ideas that take a larger amount of space to flesh out.

If you're really scared of bad writing, read http://www.sfwa.org/writing/turkeycity.html.. It pretty much covers all the common issues in amateur fantasy writing.

I'd just like to point out that, from a literal definition, every single touhou doujinshi is fanfiction. 'Fanfiction' isn't a necessary evil because there's nothing wrong with it. The problem comes when people write BAD fanfiction. The only difference between bad fanfiction and bad original writing is that original writings can just be ignored if they're dreadful, while dreadful fanfiction will enrage other fans who are only reading it because it's related to touhou or whatever.

An extended hand should only cover the face, not the head. To my knowledge at least.

There comes a point at which "improving" the art to make it "better" doesn't add to the piece significantly. This is especially true of animu, which is abstract as hell anyway.

This picture is about as exactly as good as I want to look at. This doesn't mean that the artist shouldn't try to push it further, but that the artist should instead consider what they want their art to be.

If I was this good, I'd be more concerned about figuring out how to draw worthwhile stuff, making the pictures tell stories. I might start working on drawing backgrounds or other things for the character to interact with if this guy hasn't already. Or I'd try my hand at drawing comics.

I'm not saying this piece is perfect, and the crits he's received are valid (except for the face, but that's a subjective thing).

Maybe I'm just pissed that I can't draw like that.

His comment about the face is...terrible advice, anyway. The more fundamental problems are the hands and general anatomy. It's still pretty good for not referenced, and that can only be improved with just more practice. I think it could work quite well if you know how to lay in shadows/color.
