2554205 No.2554205 [Reply] [Original]

I want to ask this before weekend /jp/ starts and I'll never get a serious answer.

I work as an assistant teacher for english in a high school that will remain anonymous. The lead teacher for the class is off on pregnancy leave and I needed something to keep the students busy for the next few weeks till school is over (they have already taken finals early.) So my best friend (lead comp. lab tech) and I came up with a great idea. Let the students play the first episode of Umineko and then hold a magic vs. no magic debate, with me playing devil's advocate if needed. Now most of my students are fairly intelligent and even the "thug niggas" can hold a fairly deep argument sometimes.

Now for the questions.

How long would ep.1 take?
I own a hard copy of Umineko ep.4, are there any legal issues for using it as a teaching aide, and if there are, would I be caught?
Is this even a good idea?

OP Said he'd be making them read Ep1, which you can download for free(demo) from the umineko site. However, episode 1 is so boring compared to the other 3...

Anyway, you should do it. It should only take a few days to a week to read, anyway.

This is a horrible idea.

If you want to give them something to debate on, show them Lucky Star and have them discuss the age of the characters.

I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be legal issues since the people who make Umineko don't seem to give a shit about that, and episode 1 would run about ten hours. Probably a bit long for even a reasonably intelligent, decent-attention-span high school kid to stomach. But do it if you want.

>> No.2554318

I'd have loved it, and I'm sure some will, but you have to realize just how strange it is. You probably won't be the "faggot weeaboo teacher" as the game itself doesn't really obsess over Japan, and there wouldn't be any legal issues with episode one being the demo, but I can't think of it going over too well.

Even if you did get everybody to play it and like it, we can't say how likely that is, then there's not much to a humans vs magic debate, the only thing there really is to debate is how much the magic applies to what is actually going on. Nobody actually thinks the magic side is reality, and even playing the devil's advocate will just appeal to human nature and emotional frailty rather than logic, which doesn't really work at a classroom level.

And the whole magic side doesn't really come into effect until two anyway. Go for it if you want, it will probably be more entertaining than whatever else they're doing, and some may like it, but don't expect too much. Oh god did I just type all of this up what's wrong with me.

OP, here.
Maybe 2% of the kids here even know what anime is, so exposing them will be a non-issue. They won't even know what they're looking at. Plus, they'll be reading. Not watching.

And thanks for the input, I'll use the demo instead of the game, and 10 hours is about a two weeks, so that's perfect.

And we already watched The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Along with about 5 B-grade kung-fu films. And all of Dirty Harry.

OP, I think you realize that the general concensous is that this is a pretty bad idea and may cause some butthurt to moralfags. If you feel like you must jam it in the kids' throats, at least do a movie like >>2554453 or even a live-action film like "Ran" or some other Kurosawa film and compare the Shakespherean themes for fuck's sake. (Inb4 /jp/ not about actual Japanese culture.) At the very minimum, find a series that has something to do with some western ideas and themes and just go with that.

Though if you do it, reaction pics of your class are required...

To get back on the subject, if OP really wants to indulge in some weeabooness with his class, he should assign them an old Kurosawa movie, or maybe something by Koreeda, since that guy likes to make films with lots of symbolism to talk about in class. Umineko isn't quite right for this sort of thing.

You think so because you are a westerner.

Okay, maybe I forgot about ol' Agatha and her ten negros, but let's face it, if you had the choice to present either a film or a VN to a class of students who according to OP are unfamilliar with such things, most logical people would go for the film. Not only is it much more compressed to fit the ideas that you need to teach, but there is a considerably less larger of a hurdle to jump in terms of, you know, actually getting the class to participate. A VN would require the students to somehow surmount:

1. Tech, not every kid may have a computer. This probably is not the case, but still. Plus, people tend to be extremely stupid when it comes to computers. I know students who pass AP/IB tests and can't tell me what an OS is. Sad, but true.
2. Again, the issue of time, I probably shouldn't have been so ignorant for not mentioning having not played the VN. But if OP, wishes to give the kids an actual chance at an education, spending at least two weeks on what is tantamount to a weeaboo fancy, is not how to go about it.
3. Inevitable moralfaggotry, I would like to see how you would defend a 2D VN with highly questionable aspects, given the stigma that otaku and anime culture is centered around violence, H, and other unsavory topics to normals, in front of an angry whore of a mom. GG wasting the time/money/etc. of the students and making the school, yourself, and all parties involved look like faggots in court.

Besides, OP gave up on VN. So the issue is more or less dead and proven to be a really bad idea.
