Cascanding programming*

They are not general purpose programming, while general purpose programming can be cascanding.

Also, about him being unable to understand Japanese in every context, it's exactly because >>25543541 westeners coming from English/American culture do not care too much about syntagmatic constructions and grammar (however "logically simple" natural languages might be) that they struggle so much more.
Technical Japanese, with the exception of new technical vocabulary, is actually simpler than colloquial Japanese and exactly because it does not have colloquial nuances that he struggles so much, he probably went through gantz very slowly too, or convinced he he is understanding everything while he actually just remembers the translation and meaning through context.

>cascanding
Method cascading is much less common than method chaining – it is found only in a handful of object-oriented languages, while chaining is very common. A form of cascading can be implemented using chaining, but this restricts the interface; see comparison with method chaining, below.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Method_cascading#

Stupid or not, It is true, if you do not understand the concept you can try to imagine a Chess game, once you move pieces then the remaining possible moves of the chess game left are a restriction of possible moves from the previous one.

Restriction in generative logic in general is a necessary concept to general purpose programming.
What this means is that even though you sense of aesthetics can be better in formatting the website, the programming you are doing is a restriction of what general programming can do.

For example, with C++ you could program an entire space craft to handle everything while orbiting in the universe.
While with Html (but you could do it with C++ too) you could only format the page in case there weren't scientists on the spaceship and people needed a graphic interface.

Stupid example, but you can ask a physicist and he'll confirm.

This >Mass Inversion Approach sounds to me like something we already have a name for: working hard (and perhaps grinding). Working hard yields good results, it is the only way to learn language. Devoting A LOT OF time and energy to practicing Japanese will make you good at Japanese. Or any other language. Or anything, really.

Grinding will burn you out really quickly, though. This is the reason why I dislike the approach used in Remembering the Kanji and >just learn 10k words first. I prefer productive learning, where you can feel that you have improved directly by literally being able to do something that you weren't able to before.

From what I have read, "MIA" is a comprehension-based approach. It relies on the idea that you should only start production (speaking/writing) once your comprehension skills have reached a certain level. To me, this is problematic. I believe the goal of language learning is to be able to communicate, which involves reception AND expression. I prefer communicative approaches, where you do both reception and production from the very beginning. It will make you feel (and be) able to actually function using a language, and you will gradually become better (you might start to understand eroge somewhat later though, but you will be able to converse with Japanese girls (female and male) MUCH sooner). I have met countless people who were able to read a language, but they totally sucked at any kind of production. From my experience, those who do both from the beginning will get better at both in the end.

There isn't really one jack-of-all-trades language learning approach, you should use different ones for different purposes.

i edited the config of the add-on by:
- setting the right source and destination field names as per the note i'm using
- explicitly adding the note name in "noteTypes"
- setting "regenerateReadings" to true
- disabling "useMecab"
but for some reason the destination fields aren't filled after note creation

i can still find the pronunciation for words which fail by highlighting them and going to Tools -> Lookup -> ...pronunciation as per the add-on page instructions, and when i click edit right after doing this the pronunciation suddenly pops up for the word in the right field
any clue what's going on?

>There isn't really one jack-of-all-trades language learning approach, you should use different ones for different purposes.
That's why you always learn with textbooks. This doesn't mean you aren't allowed to do anything else, but only textbooks will actually teach you the language without mistakes.

The biggest problem with every person who struggles with a language is that they skipped the textbook part. EVEN IF you learn with immersion and can speak and write without problems, you will still make a lot of mistakes without textbooks.

Why? Because without textbooks you don't know important rules. For example do you write in English "My wife's son" or "My wifes' son"? Sure, this is a very easy example, but without either using a textbook or a grammar book you are fucked and always insecure about what is actually right.

Now the reason why textbooks are considered the golden rule of fast learning is simply because they are teaching you
>the right grammar
>the best pace
>the most logical structure
>the most important words
And all of this in the most logical order with the right "amount" of content for each chapter. Are you allowed to immerse yourself while using textbooks? YES! Are you allowed to do what you want? YES! The only reason you use textbooks is so SOMEONE is actually guiding you through the language jungle. It's about wasting as little time as possible and just "using what you like" can lead to a very slow learning, and in the worst case, learning mistakes.

for sure this means that a cultist's claims promising huge gains are anecdotal, but then an rtk critic's claims that an rtk user's vocabulary stays below a mining+reading user's vocab are anecdotal as well.
in the absence of solid data, one can can only make guesses. to refine these guesses, one typically likes to use logic and reasoning to assess credibility.
considering this, why don't proponents of either side focus on gathering data, or at least engaging with the reasoning behind each method?

> like you to present compelling evidence in favor of the efficacy of rtk before doing it
ok but then shouldn't i also be provided with compelling evidence in favor of not doing rtk? what gives one side more weight? a logical analysis of the methods concluding one side has a more sound argument? some controlled study of both methods? large scale collection and analysis of anecdotes? or is it just status quo? (see below if that is the case)

>but why do it unless they've given compelling evidence?
this would make sense if there was some "default" to fall back to. but why is the default what you suggest? now there is evidence that textbooks don't really work, but if there weren't then how could you for instance rule that out as the standard? without evidence a person saying textbooks are the way to go would be equally justified as someone advocating reading+mining in declaring it as the standard.

>already been done to death
is there some formal and objective summary of this. i've been in these threads in and out for quite some time and it appears to be a very contentious issue with no clear resolution.

>when either side can conjure up nice-sounding arguments with no evidence then we stick to the status quo (not doing rtk)
as i said above this doesn't seem to be the case, so i need something solid and objective beyond just your assertion that it is. maybe you have some post analysis from the archives.

frankly there is also no evidence this thread's advice is the gold standard universally speaking but let's not worry about that now because i'm presently only interested in this thread's contents and its status quo.

Vocabulary you use and vocabulary you understand are two separate categories.
Beginners may feel that if they can't remember all the words and grammar points from their textbook then they have failed. When the real question is whether or not you can understand it when you see it.

If you can then you just have to keep on seeing it in different situations, and that exposure will change it from Passive Vocabulary to Active Vocabulary.

Beginners try to go straight from Nothing to Active Vocabulary, by forcing themselves to use words they're not used to yet.

sentence cards help a lot with reading in the beginning tho
you get practice reading the same things over and over so extracting meaning from the language becomes more comfortable in that controlled environment
rather than having something brand new being thrown in your face every few seconds (reading) which is torturous when you're a beginner with little grasp on any of it

first of all it's not like you're reading multiple paragraphs of handwritten kanji every day, maybe some inconsequential line to a text bubble.

second, not all kanji are equally as common, if the author goes as far as handwriting it it's usually a really common one, and the only people who still have trouble with it are ones who haven't been studying for long, and the longer i have been studying the less i encounter it

in total i have not had trouble reading a handwritten kanji more than 10 times in the year and half i have been studying. it makes no sense to study 2k kanji because i had a minor inconsequential problem 10 times that will fix itself if i just keep reading

I only remember kanji I've actually seen. I've never been in a /djt/ before. (I came here looking for 日本語字幕)
I divide them in components, learn the unknown components, learn the on yomi by associating it to a couple of jukugo and the kun yomi if I've actually seen it used as that verb or noun. I've never associated kanji to English words which would be stupid, but if the kanji is associated strongly enough to a concept like 商 for commerce, then I have no problem thinking the word in English too, because I think the concept first.
That's what I thought rtk was, but then I downloaded a bunch of anki decks (never used anki before) and it's all gay shit mnemonics written in English with no associated Japanese words. I've ignored all of that shit, downloaded the deck with the least intrusive additional stuff I could find (rrtk) and kept learning on yomi/kun yomi with the kanji, never been happier.

any shitty rtk argument can be dispelled with reading mo, just starin at them fuckin kangees, and doin mo reps
you dont even need rtk to know that 行く待つ have the same thingy that 持つ doesnt have

alright just got done watching matt's q&a videos and came up with a game plan, here it is:
1. learn kana (~1 week)
2. do rrtk while watching anime with english subs and listening to anime passively (~3 months)
3. do the tango n5 deck and read tae kim, start switching to japanese subs (3-4 months)
4. start sentence mining, spend 72% active immersion on jap subbed anime, 28% on unsubbed anime (continue until level 5 comprehension on subbed anime)
5. switch to 33% subbed anime 67% unsubbed anime (continue until listening is caught up)
6. branch out to other domains and get them up to level 5 comprehension by focusing on reading first then switch according to the same ratios in steps 4 and 5, study pitch accent
7. listen to level 6 comprehension material for several 100 hours
8. start output practice, shadowing, etc.
what do you all think?

>Receive input and you shall eventually somehow understand it all and be able to produce responses to it
This is the sort of mindset that people who have never had any discipline taught to them and don't believe in having to put in effort into things to gain something out of them. How can one understand input if one does not have the necessary functional cognitive base for it? How is it capable of being interpreted by a person except by the means of relating it to their previously held set of knowledge and beliefs? As odd as it might seem to people who support this input-based acquisition method (which seems to be not too unlike a brainwashing cult in terms of the way it proclaims itself as an absolute truth in expense of any other kind of claims and in the absence of sufficient evidence for their own), a textbook that has been prepared by a professional language teacher with the aim of introducing a person to a language using a variety of exercises through which they can see the generative elements of a language's grammar in conjunction with the words it uses is more likely to allow a that person to understand the language not just as some kind of one sided noise that appears only in external conversations but rather as a double sided tool of communication, for how can a person understand what another person intends on communicating to them if they are not capable of understanding their intentions as another person?

I'm a guy but even I'm pretty offended by some of the stories. I shouldn't be complaining about free resources, but I wonder how women or kids who are using these are reacting

From what I understand these were pulled from the Kanji Koohii site (which I haven't used, so not able to verify), and if that's the case, then these are user generated. But given how consistently crude the stories are in the KoohiiStory2 field, I'm thinking could be just one person. Or maybe I have too much faith in humanity to believe that the 2nd most popular story for a lot of kanji are those that are explicitly misogynistic or just plain crude?

Some examples:

九 - A woman in the doggie style position, waiting for my NINE inches.
中 - My GF lets me come in her mouth (pictogram).
舌 - Kissing a thousand mouths eventually gets you some tongue.
只 - My girlfriend insists that the only thing I want from her is what´s between her legs.. She´s drawn me this pictograph to demonstrate. It´s a head and two legs spread apart.. I explain that I also love her breasts, and then she smacks me in the face. I´ll never understand women..
兄 - Mother, why is elder brother´s mouth between the neighbor girl´s legs?
肖 - Hey baby, it might be a little bit of flesh now, but in a moment it´ll bear a strong resemblance to a candlestick.
活 - I´m sure I can get her pretty lively and wet using my tongue.
児 - Only 18 and already got a newborn babe. Young girls are so quick to spread their legs these days

Definitely not a prude and understand that stories have to be outrageous to stick, but some of these are just, for lack of a better word, wow.

Or did I just somehow download the NSFW deck by mistake? ;)

Nukemarine's Suggested Guide for Beginners
>I'll be honest, this is more of a thread I can link to whenever anyone asks "what next?". I figure it works better than retyping the same thing each time. Also, each of us has our own opinion on how to go about the self study route, and that's all this is: my opinion based on both my experience and feedback from this forum.

>This roadmap is aimed at people involved in a career where one can only spare 1 to 2 hours a day for to study. In addition, it's for those that like a bit more systematic structure in their studying. Because of that, I've broken it down JLPT equivalent as that's an easy reference many that study Japanese can relate. In each of those, I break it down further subsections of Kanji, Grammar, Vocabulary, Listening/Speaking via subs2srs. You build up each area slowly over time.

>I also don't offer any suggestions above JLPT 2, just due to that being my current level. Given that I'm learning JLPT 2 level, it's a bit of blind leading the blind to take my advice so buyer beware

this is just flat-out wrong. i'm constantly seeing kanji in new words and thinking "hey, that one's also used in [other word]". this happens with kanji learned both with and without rtk.

Does 持って in the sense of possession/ownership have the connotation that you have the object in question on your person? For example, does お金をちょっともっています mean something like "i've got a little money (on me right now)", or does it just mean "i've got a little money (in total)"?

why would you need to form long-term memory with anki when you see these extremely common words in your immersion all the time?
>you should soak tae kim into your bones

it's good for getting a glimpse of what's going on but there's a lot of inaccuracies and there's no reason to use it over something like dojg to actually look shit up

>> No.25583653

>>25583332
you don't need anki to form long-term memory for common words that are easily acquired from input
also 21 days is only the retirement interval, before that you will have cleared several other intervals like 1, 3, etc. meaning it will be a lot more than 21 days in total
after you retired it you will have to see the word within 21 days in your immersion before you forget it statistically, and this is not going to be a problem for the vast majority of core words since they're all common and you'll be watching jp-subbed anime every day, in fact it'll be difficult to not acquire these words if you follow through with input
>language is a marathon not a race. a long endless marathon
i agree but there are ways to make the beginning more painful than it has to be for instance by spending years on retarded beginner resources because you haven't """mastered""" them yet

Anki deck for learning kanji readings, and sometimes there are these really strange readings such as the ones highlighted in pic related. its actually an interesting question what is the most optimal way of learning new kanji if youre going for the full package: recognition and production
only using vocab is a bit aimless since youre not systematically approaching the readings and the fact that you see the kanji on the front also means you never really end up testing production but having rtgay english keywords/meanings on the front just seems like a horrible idea and forms bad habits
you also can't use jap readings for testing production because it could mean anything really

no you will not permanently cripple your japanese by not adding pitch accent to your cards
the difference is in whether you spend extra attention and time on before you can even understand japanese properly, let alone speak it. or doing it once you start output
