I switched over to watching English subbed anime once I realized there was no way of actually learning to understand raw anime, since all the guides out there are made for learning through the written rather than the spoken language.

They're not. If you've got something written down, you can see exactly how it's written and look up every single word right from there, whereas if you're listening to something, you pretty much gotta take a guess as to what sounds you're hearing, and will most likely make some mistakes unless you've got perfect listening abilities and are listening to people who speak perfectly clearly.
Since there's no way of getting perfect listening abilities, there's no way to learn to understand raw anime.

If you're using mnemonics I would honestly just do what I did since it worked for me - download the WK radical deck and spend a day or two going over that very briefly. When I was learning new kanji I would just go to WK and find whatever mnemonic they used and plug that into anki for further help

Sometimes KD is just too far-fetched and sometimes WK is the same thing. Use both going forward, you'll pick up radicals quickly as you learn new kanji.

On linux how does one unzip JP files without getting assblasted by errors?
I downloaded the NHK novel off the library, when I run unzip ./\[滝本竜彦\]\ NHKにようこそ.zip it uinzips but with errors, file names all fucked and wont open, running unzip -O shift-jis ./\[滝本竜彦\]\ NHKにようこそ.zip just outputs the unzip copyright notice
