I'm a newfag to Touhou(STGs in general). I was wondering if the games are better played with a gamepad or keyboard.

I can go get one, but I won't if it isn't worth it.

Gamepad > Keyboard

Keyboard does not have the same ease of use that a controller does. You can easily go diagonal with a controller, but not with arrow keys

Depends which you use the most. If you are used to play with a gamepad, try with that. I prefer keyboard.

For a PC-fag like me that has never owned a console since 1993, keyboard is superior. But I can understand some console fags it can be more comfortable as they are used to it.

Keyboard is best, but only if you use a separate finger for each direction. PROMETHEUS (best Western DoDonPachi scorer) uses keyboard this way. I think some famous Touhou players use keyboard too.

Eh, well, depends on what you're comfortable with. Possibly keyboard setup too. My arrow keys are setup in a plus sign, so I can easily rest a finger on each key for instant reaction.

The keyboard isn't very precise for me. When I play on lunatic and have to dodge through tiny tiny spaces, the keyboard usually presses too far and I die.

Personally I use a gamepad because my keyboard is shit and can't handle five or more key inputs at the same time.
That means that if I am going diagonally, firing and on focus mode, I can't counterbomb without releasing at least one other key.

stick > good d-pad > keyboard > bad d-pad

The problem with a pad is that MOST pads are complete shit, especially the shitty ones where it's impossible to hit a straight direction because their diagonal detection is so wide (see: xbox 360 d-pad. that's how shitty most cheap USB ones are too). It's really just a personal preference, though. Playing with a keyboard is fine, there's some few very, very good players who use keyboards for shmups.

Pad, because binding fire and focus to shoulder buttons is hella easier on my RSI-crippled fingers than holding down anything on the keyboard.

I have a ps2 to usb controller converter, so I use my ps2 controller. It works pretty well.

Everything Else: Stick > Keyboard == Pad

I'm good with the KB but I want to try a thumb stick some time for touhou. The more I imagine it the more it makes sense.
