It feels like I don't understand anything else. I tried apps, websites and guides, with no success; the only thing left are classes (I'm in the middle of nowhere so not possible) and professors (too expensive).

So, I have been using textbooks instead (french to japanese so I can't give names) and while I have learned hiragana and some sentences from them, looking online, everyone seems to agree that textbooks aren't supposed to be used exclusively (Tae Kim even says to not use textbooks).

So the question is: is it even worth it to continue using a textbook? Has anyone gotten a good level (or at least a level where they can read things) from textbooks alone?

Textbooks are fine. A common route is to take them until intermediate level, then hop to other things. So something like:

Genki 1 -> Genki 2 -> Tobira -> Immersion/Anki/grammar references/other stuff

is fine and common.

Having a strong foundation in verb conjugations: I can't emphasise enough the importance of this - if you learn the rules for conjugating verbs with different endings (eg. す、く、む etc.) you can just about conjugate any verb you learn in the future. Massive for quick progress in the more advanced stages and great for your confidence overall. (I say "just about" because there are exceptions, like る-ending verbs which vary depending on which group the verb is in.)

Immersion: Precisely because it's a relatively difficult language and there are many aspects of the language one has to adapt to and internalise in order to speak at a native level, constant exposure to the language is important in consolidating your knowledge base. I immersed myself by setting my default language on my phone and laptop to Japanese, which forced me to read Japanese at every turn. I also spend a bit of time reading news/blogs in Japanese. Just a few minutes each day can make a big difference in the long term. It hones your overall grasp on the language.

Private tutoring: Having one-on-one tuition used to be expensive, but these days there are good sites that offer access to excellent tutors at reasonable prices (~£20/hour in my case). Private tutors are great because they can focus on your particular needs/weaknesses and custom tailor your lessons for you instead of just progressing for the overall benefit of one big class. I also think it helps if you stick to one tutor when still at the beginner/intermediate level, because sometimes different tutors will have slightly different interpretations on things or just different tics (they are people, after all). Sticking with one tutor means you stick with one "system" of understanding the language and avoids confusing discrepancies when you're still building your foundation.

Japanese meet ups: Also called 話す会, these meet ups where the purpose is to (mainly) speak in Japanese are GREAT, especially because it's essentially active learning (VS passive). I was scared to death going into my first meet up but once I got past that, it was amazing. You're often chatting with a mix of natives and non-natives, so you're not just getting exposure to the language but also to the living culture and mentality, which I think is a huge part of understanding the language at an advanced level. In these settings, you feel a lot less self-conscious about making mistakes too, since many in the crowd are also learners and the native speakers are often really helpful there. These meet ups helped massively in getting me comfortable with speaking a language I was still new to and building my confidence. Also, a lot of English speakers struggle with concepts that are core to Japanese but are largely alien in the English speaker (eg. intransitive verbs, when to use indirect forms of expressions like こと, etc.) These meet ups are great because you pick up these things through immersion. Obviously with Covid this isn't quite possible in its traditional format, but I'd highly recommend attending these frequently when possible again - especially if you've built up a decent foundation of grammar and vocabulary and want to try expressing yourself in Japanese.

Rote memorisation: This one is mainly for those struggling with kanji. My best tip for you is to handwrite the kanji you're learning - do it 10x over and try to understand the etymology of the character if you can. That would go a long way to retaining the knowledge over time. I definitely had an advantage in this respect since I can already speak and write traditional Chinese, which is often similar to kanji so it was no big stretch to pick up new words. As for how I learned traditional Chinese words... still those two things: rote & etymology.
