I thought that I had done pretty well in my first 6 months, especially since I could now hold basic conversations with the local obaachans and I knew like 1000 kanji based on Kanji Study (No, I did not know 1000 kanji. I merely recognize the meaning and was an idiot for thinking so.). But that changed when I came across a Discord server through AnimeCards that completely changed my language learning habits.

When I first arrived on the server, I could barely pass the N4 vocab quiz and when I joined a VN reading stream, I could read nothing! Tip #1: Speed run the basics (Hiragana, Katakana, common grammar points) and get to reading ASAP! Get used to Kanji but don't force yourself to individually learn kanji beyond a certain point (For me it was 1000-ish)

Tip 2#: Don't be afraid to start hard, if that means you're enjoying what you're reading! Always challenge yourself with new things and try out whatever you feel looks interesting, especially when it comes to Visual Novels!

Tip #3: Use N1 practice books to get used to the questions, but don't depend on them. I believe that language should be acquired and to really get good at reading, you just have to read. I highly recommend Visual Novels since they have great context (image, audio, sentence) for mining cards, but also because they are quite dense and do force you to read. Of course, if you don't like VNs then that's fine, I just want to highlight how they have helped me so much to get better at reading and learning vocab until now.

It's not that simple. I can easily remember the stroke order and what it looks like now, but it still looks awful. All the lines have to be the correct length, the curve has to be weighted a specific way, you have to have the right amount of space between the horizontal line and the curve, etc. It's like I'm learning how to write all over again, so I have to achieve muscle memory. I know everyone has their own handwriting, but you can tell when someone is familiar with writing by the smoothness of their strokes, while mine lack confidence. I'm thinking of ordering some grade school calligraphy books and special pens.

I also want to make physical notes as I learn through reading (I'll do digital too), but it kills two birds with one stone. I would like the experience of my 200th page looking miles better than my first.

I see. What helped me immensely back in the day was writing lyrics for songs that I like entirely in kana. I think that helped me more than simply writing the same one over and over and then moving onto the next.

Since you probably won't need to write too often, you probably shouldn't spend too much time on kanji beyond basic stroke order rules. At that point you can look up any word you need and write it if you can't produce it from memory. Worst that will do to you is make your handwriting look a bit like computer font, but ironically that will make it 10x easier for the average Japanese person to read than most chicken scratch handwriting. And trust me, no one will judge you very harshly for handwriting so long as its legible. I would only worry about it once absolutely everything else is top notch (speaking, listening, reading).

The stroke order won't matter AS MUCH as I get better. I even screw up writing the Latin alphabet all the time, and it's not like I write letters in the exact same order as everyone else, but my writing looks fine. The difference is I'm not learning to write in English like was I was when I was early elementary school. I don't have 20+ years of experience writing in Japanese, so the sooner I can write while subconsciously following the rules, the better. I want to be thinking about the content of my writing, not how I'm writing. I don't want 上がる to take 20 seconds to write because I have to think about it.

由 is not related, 専 is a simplified form of 專 the end stroke is there to make it easier to connect to the bottom part of the original

Ah, that explains it. I don't understand why 専 is a grade 6 kanji and 博 is a grade 4 kanji. You're learning the primitive either way, but 専 appears more frequently in writing than 博 and is more simple to write, so you'd think they would prioritize the easier one.
