If I was the emperor of Gensokyo, the first thing I would do would be to ban deodorant! It would be so cute to see every girl in Gensokyo constantly embarrassed and flustered about their armpits being steamy stuffy and stinky, especially when I tease them about it!

I love cute smelly Touhou pits!

All you would do is create a black-market for deodorant.

Both are correct now. English now accepts both forms since people keep using was instead of were

If I were the emperor of Gensokyo I'd abolish the age of consent and make rape of Youkai completely legal

It's still a good thing to preserve this sort of subtle grammatical difference though, don't you think? Regardless of what is "correct" or "incorrect", it decreases the expressiveness of the language a little if there is no difference between "if I was" and "if I were".

It's a common mistake to confuse "were" with "was". I made the same mistake when I was younger until someone corrected me.

Were does sound better but this is simply how language works. Once the majority gets used to something that becomes the new normal and hence correct. This doesn't make the previous form wrong, just archaic

This is basically true. Others might huff and puff about it, but this is the natural evolution of grammar.

The only deodorant in Gensokyu is sold by Rinnosuke. His ability only gives vague information about Outside World items, so although he correctly identified the scent and flammability, from that he reached the natural conclusion that it was incense. All youkai who tried it concluded that it was inferior to native Gensokyo incense. There are a few youkai capable of correctly identifying it (Yukari, Mamizou, the Moriya Shrine residents), but either they never happened to visit Kourindou while it was in stock, or in the case of Yukari, are entertained by people using it wrong and prefer to stay silent.

How did people long ago handle deoderant? Did they just not use it? They had to of used something. I can't imagine gensokyo girl's wouldn't have anything to use there...

Well if you consider the characters to be Japanese, they wouldn’t have any need for deodorant because East Asians and some SEA have the gene that causes them to have zero body odor from sweat. The Japanese calling Westerners smelly monkeys isn’t an exaggeration. This all requires the supernatural youkai to follow human biology though so anything goes.
