here's how i acquired english as a teenager
>took english classes at school for 2-3 years
>started playing online games and made friends from english speaking countries
>chatted to them all day long while looking up words i didnt know in a dictionary
>watched shows and movies in english
>meanwhile continued to take english classes at school
that's it really. lets call it "all english all the time". i didnt get burned out. and i didnt start hating the language because i made many friends that are wonderful people, and even if i started hating the country (USA) i'd still like the people.

learning english to make friends makes sense because english is the most used language in the world meaning not only do you have access to the most interesting people in the world (i.e. americans, you're obsessed with our politics and culture/media) but you have access to ESLs from all over the world.

why would you learn japanese to make friends? japs are ignorant isolated bug people and way way less interesting than americans let alone everyone else.

im almost 1 year in. i started because i went to japan and liked it a lot and wanted to talk more to the locals but their english wasnt that good.

becoming able to read japanese and understanding it when its spoken has been/is addictive to me so and i have really come to like how it sounds. it turned into a positive feedback loop

ive considered quitting at times

i concluded that i wont stop because ill still be watching anime, jap dramas and reading manga, light novels and vinnies so i might as well do it in japanese, rather than through a filter (translation). a minor contributor is sunk cost, though i know its a fallacy

i have no defined end goal with this, its just something i like to do

I learned the basics through classes. They were incredibly spotty and didn't properly explain very basic grammar which caused me to make mistakes like に when I should have used で etc. And I didn't know lots of basic words like 走る and 望む. I had to go back on my own and properly learn even very basic stuff. What's more is I don't consider the basics to be learning Japanese. That's like saying that the tutorial is the main game.

My progress speed isn't shit. In the past few months I learned far more that I have at any other point in my journey thus far. Since August I went from being MAYBE N4 up to my current level. Personal pronouns are honestly one of my favourite things about the Japanese language, especially as a fiction writer; working out which pronouns my characters would use and when actually gives me a lot of insight into them.

I personally like 僕, which in media I often see used by young boys and boyish girls; as someone who identifies as non-binary, I love it. (Though I assume should I actually use it, as a thirty year old englishwoman, most would consider it a mistake.)

one of the comfiest anime i have ever watched with a simple but well developed setting
the parts where they would talk about technical things like cooking, dyeing, and carpentry were hard to follow but they still managed to make it fun to learn
everything else was pretty simple, only an occasional moment of being thrown off by the accent

Hi guys I have been doing DuoLingo as my main resource for learning Japanese but I am frustrated with how little I am learning. I have been watching lots of anime in Japanese with English subtitles so I can hear the words. I have been using practice sheets to write the Kanji I know. I have also been listening to the MangaSensei podcast on Spotify.

But when I go to these outside resources, I still don’t understand what they are saying! I looked up JPLT level 5 stories and I still can’t understand the whole thing. If I was a Level 3 DuoLingo learner (out of 7 total levels), don’t you think I’d be able to recognize more words, more Kanji?

The issue is not retaining the old information, it’s that I’m hearing so many new words or grammar that I can’t understand what’s coming in my ears.

I’m frustrated that they don’t give me very much Kanji and start by spelling in Hiragana, then switches to the Kanji for a word I was used to seeing in Hiragana. I wish they would just show me the Kanji, then put the Hiragana spelling next to it for pronunciation.

Is there something similar to DuoLingo where I can get more content? The problem with using Podcasts or Anime is that I’m hearing new words but they are never explained so I need to know the grammar and work with the words before I can hear them and know what they are.

some months ago i went from 1-2h of reading to 3-4h of reading per day , usually reading news or reading/novels books in japanese and i feel like my japanese reading ability and my vocabulary knowledge improved. most of the words that i do not know are most likely words that are not pretty common and rank like 20000+ frequency list but although i increased my reading by a lot my anki retention rates goes down and it is usually like the case that it is a word that i read ones in a novel and then add it into anki and never saw it again in immersion

any else experienced something similiar?
