Please read 2-3 sites before playing and even then try the singleplayer games first.
Playing without knowing what you do is not only frustrating for yourself but also for your opponents, a player that left because he couldn't ron for his no Yaku hand or because someone ron'd his discard just kills the whole fun for everyone.

Usually, a game lasts around 30 minutes, so please, if you're not going to stay until the end, respect the other players and don't join a new game.

Also keep in mind that Mahjong is more a game of "not losing" than straightforward winning.
Furthermore you play with 3 other people and luck plays a big part in it, so dont expect to win more than 1 out 4 games, especially not as a beginner.

You're better off holding on to them for when you need to discard your hand, you will have four possible safe tiles, or when you are close to tenpai and you don't expect your competitors to hold your waiting tiles (since once you open Kan they will know what you need).

Also yeah, I won because South seat was a retard, but it still feels great o make a comeback on the fourth round, especially since I was Furiten a tile or two ago.

1. You declare a kan for no reason.
2. Dealer declares riichi next turn.
3. You break up that xia pair in your hand.
4. Dealer is on a dual xia/pei wait.
5. Dealer's 12000 point hand becomes 24000 with added dora from your kan.

You keep the tiles.

Remember to always discard isolated tiles first. You can always turn the 4tiles into a triplet later in the game. No need to rush by kanning at the start.
Also unless you are in tenpai yourself and no one else riichi yet then do your kan. You can also kan if you feel you have a good wait and are not worried about giving the other guy extra 2dora indicator.

Washizu Mahjong is an interesting prospect. I don't think it'd work on Tenhou because of the way the hands are displayed. IE, you wouldn't be able to clearly see the players to your left and right's tiles very clearly.

This is something I've been dicking around with in my spare time. If Mahjong weren't such a complex thing to program and if I could devote time/sanity, I'd actually try to finish, automate and polish it (yes, the interface does look like ass, thanks for noticing). So far it's just been a fun thing to play around with a few friends on, although 4 player Washizu Mahjong is probably not as interesting as two on two would be.

Akagi DS has a Washizu Mahjong mode, if you've never played it, so I suggest trying that out if you haven't yet and would like to.

Flower/Seasons, Hong Kong style:
If you draw one, set it aside and draw from the back wall. Your own seat number gives you 1 fan; getting all four same color is another fan; if you win with NO flower tiles, one fan. If you draw all the flower/seasons, 4 fan total.

If you are the dealer you get 1.5x more.
For hand less than 5han, it is more complex to count since you have to take into account -fu.
But generally just think of 1han - 1k, 2han - 2k and so on unless you got a huge -fu (you get more -fu with terminals/honors or doing KAN)
Just play with the -fu scoring table or just let tenhou calculate for you.

Most importantly is to how to count the number yaku/han in your hand.

Don't worry about it too much if it goes over your head, scoring is probably the most complicated part of mahjong. In fact, it might be easier to just memorize charts...

If anyone knows about Four Winds, all of my mahjong knowledge comes from Saki and Akagi. Is there a similar ruleset to those? Is there a better version of mahjong I can download and play on my own? I'm not a huge fan of Four Winds' interface.
