When I was younger I never thought I'd grow to fancy OLs and housewives so. But nowadays they're truly the type that interests me the most.
Can someone explain to me the puns or whatever wordplay reasoning went into Rinko > Rikky though?
Kouguchi Sukebei into Horne Doug is sort of self explanatory. If a bit on the nose, but the original obviously is too. Kind of made me chuckle.
But i don't rally get the wife's name. Though I suppose changing Sukebei's name would warrant changing the wife's name too, just for consistency if anything.

Nah, if anything the opposite. Remove voices from nukige so I can read through quicker. Letting all voices play out takes forever and has almost never any value. But you know hwat, let's just leave voices alone, k? If you want them "removed" then mute them.

>> No.33842432

>>33842070
I should specify that I'm not really speaking from the stance of preference, I, of course, prefer voices over no voices, but, from a practical point of view, I think it has a lot of benefits that one can't really ignore in the face of the slowly-but-surely dying industry.

I was thinking about it a lot while playing Rance Quest. There's such a huge variety of tiny little optional interactions between the characters, tidbits here-and-there that are tucked away for those who go looking for them, for practically every single character, even the very minor ones. Nevermind that it's a gameplay title and the format lends itself to that a bit better, but if it was a fully voiced title you would have never have got that, at least not in a reasonable timespan. Nevermind all the revisions that were brought with the Magnum edition.

And, you know, you hear things all the time about how eroge are dying, how there aren't as many good authors coming onto the scenes, how the mobile and light novel industry are far more lucrative for writers and companies as they're simply more cost effective and move a lot more units. Visual novels are a huge investment insofar as money is concerned, and voice actors are probably one of the biggest -- if not the biggest -- part of that.

Though it's a video game, I remember reading some interview from one of the Obsidian writers about their time on New Vegas, how there were all sorts of script revisions / additions they wanted to make, but how it was too late in production and they couldn't get certain voice actors to work on certain days due to scheduling conflicts. I imagine stuff like that happens in visual novels all the time.

tl;dr
1) More cost efficient in a dying industry
2) Gives the writers more freedom
3) Potentially allows for a lot more content

>> No.33842486

You can just do what agile indie studios do. Grab VA's who can always and easily be dragged into the studio.

>> No.33842542

>>33842486
That's true, but I'm sure there's probably a question of quality. At least my experience with indie games is that their voice acting quality varies greatly. Japan tends to have higher standards there, but honestly even they have a lot of shit voice actors in the industry, especially the some of the new ones that are desperate to get onto every single game they can. Thankfully they usually only show up in bargain bin nukige, though.

>> No.33842742

>>33842432
>but if it was a fully voiced title you would have never have got that, at least not in a reasonable timespan
What do voices have to do with translation/release speed lol? And for the Japanese version who cares if it takes longer to release to record voices? There's enough games to play in the meantime.
>le voices cost a lot argument
>le eroge are dying argument
>le no good authors write VNs argument
>le mobile and LNs are better argument
Yikes.
>script revisions
Not much of a problem with the Japanese releases. The voices are recorded after the script is finished and it's done in a timely manner. Patches to fix typographical errors are normal, rewrites/additions don't happen that often and usually if it's done then during the post-release support phase so voice actors can record the lines quickly. The Japanese industry is a lot faster and reliable than Western shit with their union crap. Seiyuu have a contract and quickly get to work, no renegotiations for "additional projects" needed.
>Potentially allows for a lot more content
No it doesn't. You could argue that lowering the number of heroines in moege can potentially do the same, yet it's not the case. Less heroines = shorter game = low priced eroge. No one writes a longer scenario with less heroines. And no one makes a longer game with more content because the cost for voices falls off. You get the same game just without voices. And most eroge are voiced nowadays even low-budget doujin.
Some seiyuu really are fucking expensive but it comes with giving your game a better image. Devs can always opt for no-name seiyuu if budget is an issue. Excuse it with "we want to give fresh talent a chance to grow."

>> No.33842755

>>33842432
Obviously I can only speak for myself but I'm not interested in a visual novel without voices. Games like Rance or Ace Attorney get by without them because they're, well, games and there's more than just the writing keeping me engaged. Without voices I'd rather just read a physical book.

>> No.33842932

>>33842742
We get like maybe 1 good eroge release every 5 years. Maybe. Shits dead as fuck
Compare it to 2000-2010 where you have tons of great releases from loads of authors, almost all of which have moved on to light novels, mobile games, or the anime industry now
I don't agree on removing voices but he's right. Industry is kill. It sucks but you'd have to be stupid to not realize it

>> No.33842966

>>33842742
>What do voices have to do with translation
I didn't say anything about translation. Release speed is certainly a factor though because titles with huge amounts of text take time to voice. It's not really my main point though and I agree that there's plenty of other titles to distract yourself with in the meantime.
>le no good authors write VNs argument
I did not imply this.
>le mobile and LNs are better argument
I did not imply this. Reading comprehension, please.
>Not much of a problem with the Japanese releases. The voices are recorded after the script is finished and it's done in a timely manner.
I brought up Rance Quest because it was a game that received a gigantic revision/overhaul with the Magnum release, in part due to how critical the reception was with the initial release. It resulted in a better game in the end, and in a fairly short time frame as well, less than a year after the initial game's release. I do not think such a time frame would have been possible had it been fully voice acted, nor do I think the option for such a huge overhaul would have been levied had it been fully voiced acting either. It's a little too specific overhaul and I can't see such a scenario happening with most conventional types of visual novels. It was mostly used to illustrate a scenario in which a lack of voice acting greatly benefited a title that was in a tight spot.

I'm mostly just spitballing and rambling. Don't take it too seriously. Though when it comes to low cost doujin titles I do think that they'd be better off spending more money on art assets than voices, especially insofar as the more story focused ones are concerned.

the problem with this is VNs are already bloated and need more trimming if anything else.
>I was thinking about it a lot while playing Rance Quest.
A perfect example of a bloated mess of a game that really needed someone to cut the fat in the editor's room.
>And, you know, you hear things all the time about how eroge are dying
Plotge need to be shorter and cheaper. The problem with someone buying something like, say, Rewrite, is they struggle through 50 hours of bullshit for the 20 hours of story and character that they actually want.

>> No.33844372

Rance Quest is pretty short, though. Most of the content is optional. You could finish it in 15 hours probably if you just stick to the main quests.

>Plotge need to be shorter and cheaper. The problem with someone buying something like, say, Rewrite, is they struggle through 50 hours of bullshit for the 20 hours of story and character that they actually want.
This is just an issue with the genre altogether. It's why the first thing I recommend to any newcomer are the translated Nitro+ titles, since they can actually into pacing. I would say that plotge tend to be more tolerable in regards to their atrocious pacing because at least they tend to have stronger main characters more often than not. A good protagonist can carry a lot.

>> No.33844897

>>33844193
Bullshit. People who buy/play something like Rewrite love all the padding. And Key games only really have a satisfying emotional effect on readers because you spend all that time with the characters.
A better example would be Baldr Sky, which was discussed to death already. But TLDR most of the game is repeated several times in every route plus Reminiscence mode. Cutting that fat or at least having a working skip read text function would've improved the game a lot.
The issue with plotge is that they always take their time establishing the setting and using hours of slice of life to make you believe the world is normal before dropping some sick shit on you. And bad plotge will throw slice of life at you between the good stuff. Very out of place. Tighter writing is needed.
>Rance is a bloated mess

Hi. QC here.

I want to explain this thing with the names. In the original there is established right in the first scene that Doug calls his wife by name "Rikky" but she is so horny for him that she only understands "Dicky" or analogous Rinko/Chinko.

Rinko is actually not just a name to rhyme with Chinko but it can also be read as りんかん(rinkan/gangbang) + 子 (kid) => Girl that gets gangbanged (doesn't actually happen in the game as it's a purege but that underlines her promiscuity.)

Later there is a transitional H-Scene in bed where she comes hard and her words slur from Dicky (Chinko) over the Kunreishiki version (Tinko) which we simply turned into "Ticky" and from then it transitions into "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Now tell me another way to localize this elaborate terrible pun without giving the girl and name like Vikki or Rikky. I can't come up with anything.

I'll show you the scene in question in the next post because otherwise this is getting too long.

>> No.33852105

Obviously I am not allowed to show the script but I can copypaste the lines.

Twinkle! Twinkle! L-L-Little star!

How I wonder what you are……。
How I wonder what you are!

……まぶしすぎる。
She's up above the world so high.

As you can see the translator tried to find a way to keep both the pun with the similar sounding names as well as the transitions to kunreishiki romanization with a single letter changed which then funnels into the twinkle twinkle little star reference.

You will see that even H-Scenes can be serious business that require thought and not just mindless translation.

>I also started working on converting the PS2 version voices to the PC version to be an added option, because I detest how overall cringe/low quality the PC version voices are in comparison, whereas the PS2 voices are fantastic IMO and are part of why I fell in love with Snow (I'd played it on PS2 because I happened to come across that version of it in a Japanese game store, knew nothing about it but I had a feeling it might be good so I just took it). While I'm at it, I'm adjusting the ORG files so that the feature in RealLive where you can toggle individual characters' voices can be added and actually work. And speaking of the PS2 version, I'm thinking an "all ages" patch would be a good idea to have as an option for... reasons. I'm OK with continuing to do this stuff solo, since the translation is the real behemoth anyhow and not everyone might agree with me on this.
According to vndb there's two voice casts for the game and in older games like this it's normal that the all-ages one uses different seiyuu who don't do porn and that cast is used for anime adaptations.
I missed the part "to be an added option" so should be fine.
>As for it not being finished, I'm the guy who led the group that got Angel Beats done in 3 months. I get things done
This game has over 70k lines, don't underestimate that even with your prior experience. Also you have a different team here. Fuwatard projects often fail and people are unreliable. The Alka group is kinda like a "we want to be pros and act like pros so we'll get hired or financed to do official work" thing. Several members already work for official companies.
Anyway good luck. I love older games like Snow so I'd like this completed as well.

Wouldn't matter if he wants to or not, if the company has a board of directors, they can vote to remove him. Something similar happened to Steve Jobs before they brought him back. Sometimes they don't even "fire" them but force them to resign from the position and move them to a new position which has no control over the business, which usually leads to the person leaving the company. I am not saying it's a good idea or that is the case with this.

>If he changed focus over an area it's because he believed he found someone who could do it better or he just didn't want to deal with it anymore.

Is probably the case in this situation, but the board of directors in every company has the power to remove any member if there are enough votes, which Peter will more than likely to be a member if he is the founder.

Know that the pirate version is buggy. Sekai for yet another time released something with untranslated parts, buggy H-scenes, lines and voices being off by one. They really do no QC at all. This shit happened in all 4 9-nine games, Nanarin, Nekonin, Hoshimemo, Leyline and who knows what. Starting to think they fuck it up on purpose because of the myth that pirate versions never get updated. Recently there's also this rumor floating around that Sekai tracks piracy numbers by comparing store sales, Steam sales and how many people download their adult patches. Conveniently happens now with several new releases that are buggy and require updating.
I wonder when Island Diary and Love's Sweet Garnish 2 will be uploaded.

Quest doesn't feel that bloated at all, maybe because it's chopped up into miniadventures, most of which you can ignore or simply do on your own time. You would think that a game the size of X would have more pacing problems, but it doesn't really. To be fair, it does kind of cheat by putting a bunch of its text behind gacha mechanics and making it impossible to see all of the story related text in a single playthrough, much like how it's impossible to character clear everyone and conquer every country in Sengoku Rance in a single playthrough.

I'd guess they wanted him to make a new all-ages version, since the only previous ones were on Dreamcast and PS2, probably with even more censoring or routes removed entirely (e.g. the loli nurse) to make sure it can get on Steam.

I for one am happy that Conjueror is no longer able to produce shitty (but not subpar if only because "par" is so low) translations of actually good games. Sure, would have been nice if it didn't have to involve his death, but omelets and eggs y'know.

The grab the pussy thing was a retarded tempest in a teapot, however.

The seabed translation has literal translation 101 blunders like always using "confirm" for 確認 whether or not it makes any sense in English, apart from its constant crimes against smooth English flow (admittedly more an editor responsibility, don't let Gare edit). There are also a lot of indications of lack of research for terms, leading us to wonders like "gallop tune" (circus tune), "one-coin lunch" (costs 50/100 yen coin), "soil fireflies" (basically glow worms), "gel" for ゲル when there is a joke about a frog sound (but keeping in the "frog" mention), &c. The translation triggered me hard enough that I eventually resolved that I'd read it in Japanese if I ever read it again. That said, seabed is also just boring af and that is unlikely to be entirely the translation's fault.

It also has the uniquely Japanese problem of unclear attribution of dialogue. Since it's unvoiced and written in NVL format you often can't tell who is speaking in the long strings of conversation which are unbroken by dialogue tags (such as "she said"). I suppose this is how light novels are written? It's also a problem in their comics which often fail to clearly designate to whom each speech bubble belongs. That combines with the sleep-inducing writing style to give you conversations such as this:
>"You should try the cakes here."
>"Are they good?"
>"Yes they are good."
>"Okay, I will try one of their cakes."
>"Good."
>"They had cakes like this in your hometown didn't they?"
>"I think so."
>"It's a good cake."
>"Good."

SeaBed is a mind-altering experience that sent me into a trance-like state that few other works of media have ever induced in me. Finishing it was like waking up from a dream. A reviewer on DLSite described the game as "無味無臭の毒薬" and that's really the best description of it that I've come across; you just need to play it for yourself and see, because the appeal can't really be summed up in a paragraph or two. For something concrete, though, I will say that I find its take on psychology as a practice pretty legit.
