Use Genki 1 and Genki 2 to start your journey into Japanese. Tae Kim is bitching so much about textbooks that he completely forgot to actually teach Japanese beginner friendly.

After Genki you should use some beginner intermediate textbook and then tobira. After this a beginner textbook for advanced Japanese is highly advised to not be stuck in the dekinai trap.

But I bet you want to do your shitty "AJATT" or "MIA" bullshit where you make "fast progress", but then quit Japanese because you can't improve.
To this day I have to see one person who could master Japanese without textbooks or without going through the Japanese school system.

The worst thing about starting Japanese is that you can't rush the language. Either you spent your time with Heisig and textbooks or you spent your time in a few years on looking for English subs because you suck in Japanese and fell for the "DON'T USE TEXTBOOKS" meme.

i already spent 6 months as an exchange student in japan, right after i’d finished going through core6k. i tried making friends with people my age and even tried drinking and stuff, but man, there’s nothing like home.
japan is home for japanese people. for people there, it’s where their mothers, fathers, sisters, grandparents, etc. all live, where their ancestors’ graveyards are, where the shrines built by their clans are, etc.
for me, my ancestors originally came from spain, but had spent at least 400 years in mexico, built their own towns, churches, ranches, etc. before i was born, and mexico is the country i, in contrast to japanese people, grew up surrounded by. the mountains covered by short grasses and bushes are what i saw around me, whenever i went to school or played soccer with other kids from the neighborhood.
mexican humor is very different from japanese humor, and even if there are certain things that are appreciated in many parts of the word, like slapstick and word play, or dumb penis jokes, it’s impossible to really say they’re the same.
i’m not saying i hate japan or anything, but i can’t say it’s my country or that it could ever substitute the country i was born in.
maybe other people will claim i didn’t know the language well enough, or that maybe i didn’t hang out with the right people, but i think it’s fair to say that one ought not to expect any two countries to be identical.

for me english is just yet another language i had to learn at school so even if i do like some english language stuff in particular i don't really feel any strong psychological attachment to it.
