A lot great and not so great answers on here and having moved to Japan and actually trying to pass the N2 in one year. Maybe my story will help.

I came to Japan barely able to speak more than a few phrases. I remember as soon as I arrived my co-workers were asking me if I could speak Japanese yet. My boss was generous and terribly honest. The teacher before me had in six months achieved speaking fluency before returning to Canada and the teacher before him didn't talk much but passed the N2 after 1 year of studying. She assured me that I ought not to compare myself to him since he was a Oxford Alumni and I just simply wasn't a match for his achievements. Well nothing could stir me more to action than a challenge like that. First I bought all of the Pimsluer Japanese 1,2 and 3 at the time going for $300. I think the first 12 lessons are helpful for starters but beyond that if you're not a traveling business exec family man there's no point to the rest of it. I studied 3 to 4 hours day. The test was in 15 months.

The first obstacle was I still spoke too much English. My friends, co-workers and girlfriend all spoke very good English. So My 5th month in I swore off English outside of work for an entire month to force myself to speak more. I bought loads and loads of text books watched early age anime and took lessons on Saturdays and at night I would practice writing Kanji using the SRS method. The month before the test I was doing a lot of practice tests and each one was looking closer and closer to passing. Then I took the test waited a couple months for the results by mail. I remember seeing the big red letters stamped on my results 不合格 Fail. I did so bad I even scored lower than what random guessing would have gotten me on certain parts. Though I passed the listening and vocab sections.

The Japanese language is a beast! After I failed I blamed the text books and my surroundings for keeping me back so I volunteered to do farm work around Japan for 4 months staying with Japanese families and going for total immersion. I went back to work started playing video games like Zelda, talking to my GF jn Japanese only, reading young readers books in Japanese and thought dang I feel like I've doubled my Japanese I'm gonna try that N2 again and break that test in half! This was a year later this time I felt great while taking taking it; my understanding was twice as good and I felt twice and confident and guess what? I failed harder than my first go. I got 2 pts less than my first try.

I guess the lesson here is unless you already speak Chinese or Korean this is going to be a very difficult task and maybe you're not as hard-headed as I am but you're gonna need a source of never ending determination. I do know of 3 people personally who did pass the N2 in a year one with no language background and the other fluent in Spanish. They studied harder than I did and were very passionate about Japanese. If you know Chinese you'll be able to do the N2 in six easily and N1 in a year not only does the kanji borrow from Chinese a majority of their vocabulary does too. My Chinese friends say studying 2 hrs a day is enough for them. And if you're Korean you can probably learn it even faster. Their grammar is nearly the same and they share a lot of the same words. Every Korean I've met is speaking fluently in 3 months. The relevance to other languages is huge. For example if you are a native English speaker you could easily achieve the same result in French 4x as fast as someone from an unrelated background such as Korean. Fluent in French in 6 months very doable and I would say much easier than fluent in Japanese in 2 years.

I would also like to add that my efforts of aiming a little to high were more harmful than helpful. I was always using material above my level. I was hoping that it would force me to adapt quicker. It actually won’t work. Just like weight lifting or learning a new instrument you want to work on something probably only 5% above you’re level. For example you won’t get much stronger trying to dead lift 1000 lbs when you can only lift 100. instead lift 95 once for 3 sets and you’ll be safer and stronger quicker. obviously starting out in your guitar journey you wouldn’t start by playing only Jimi Hendrix songs. I’ve been playing by this rule with Japanese for the last 3 months and my test scores(using sample tests) have double in the areas I’m studying. It took me years to come to this conclusion. Study at your level no matter how crazy your goals are. 5% overwhelmed and 95% slightly underwhelmed. The opposite only works in the movies!
