old chinese was monosyllabic and it has no inflections so it was 1 symbol 1 word

>> No.33970244

No prob. As far as the basics go, there's quite a bit. To learn the two main alphabets, Hiragana and Katakana, it would take no longer than 2-3 weeks to pretty much fully memorize it and read without looking up a letter. To learn the "3rd" alphabet, Kanji, it will take as much time as you have left on this earth so I wouldn't bother too much for the level you want to get to. Just learn the easy and simple ones like days of the week and such. To learn the basic grammar, it will take a bit longer. A couple months to be exact. The basic grammar, alphabet and vocab/kanji would all be covered in the Genki 1 textbook. I highly recommend this book as well as the workbook that goes with it. Together they cost $70 U.S i think.

As far as grammar itself, there's quite a lot. But again you only really need whats in Genki 1 to learn the basics

With Anime, I can pretty much watch without subs and get a pretty good feel for whats being said but I still use them to fill the blanks. It depends on the show too. If its pokemon or something than Im completely good without subs but if its something like The Monogatari series, I need the subs.

I would say that there is that point where it clicks. But it happens on two fronts. One is the reading and writing, and the other is with speaking. The one that will come first is the reading and writing. After you learn the foundations everything after follows those rules very strictly. This is very unlike English or German where the rules are only a loose guideline ( I studied german for 2 years but got frustrated with the lack of strict verb and noun conjugation rules). With speaking it will happen much later. This is because speaking uses a lot more complex forms at a much faster rate. That being said Japanese is not anything like English or German. With English and German, they are very closely related languages so once you study enough it will start to become easier every day because similarities will start to show. But Japanese is much more of an uphill battle. With each step it doesn't become more familiar for quite a while. But once it does, it really pays off. To get to a point where you don't need textbooks is not really something I'm confident in saying but if you aren't aiming for native fluency, you'll be fine I think.

The most important thing is to keep at it and to not quit if you get frustrated, and to study regularly. I wish you luck and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

No great interest, but I learned before I visited Korea to see a family member working there, I learned Hangul.

It’s so fucking easy; you can literally learn it in a day. Also, if you have a good foundation in Jap or better yet, Chinese, you’ll have a major advantage in learning Korean words, as something like 55% of them are taken directly from Chinese; you just have to associate the Korean pronunciations with the morphemes.

because they have a larger population. per person they're worse than most of western europe. china has a larger economy than japan but individual chinese people are dogshit compared to japanese people.
