dear esteemed 4channel staff
wanikani.com is a commercial online flashcard service, not a guide to learning japanese. the op of >>34240720 is a troll who keeps making threads hours early in order to advertise a commercial service in the opening post. he has been doing this since february:

he still persists in violating the rules despite having several of his recent threads deleted:

i honestly recommend starting out with vns

they have a huge advantage over manga in that they're easy to read on a technical level thanks to texthookers and popup dictionaries, and this means that not only is reading them less mentally exhausting vs. manga (meaning you will be able to read for longer periods of time), you can also read more in a shorter period of time vs. manga thanks to how quickly you can look things up (and the more you read, the quicker you will get better)

while it might be pretty hard to find any vns as easy as yotsubato, there are relatively easy ones out there for you to read

furigana'd manga is paced by the reader and has the benefit of having text that's meant to be lain on top of pictures.
subbed anime is anime littered with lines of text that a learner must unnaturally have to pause in order to look words up.
you probably don't respect anime as a medium, so for you it's just shitty language learning material that you can abuse however you want.

the jamal method is great and all if you're a teenager and have all the time in the world to learn japanese

if you're well into your 20s or even older though then you don't really have the luxury of learning through something as slow as video games where you spend the majority of your time not actually interacting with japanese at all and end your day having read like a manga chapter worth of text or something

big boys need to make sure that their time spent with japanese media is actually time spent reading and/or listening to nihongo if they want to get anywhere in under a decade

It has been exactly 7 years ago since I first started learning Japanese on 4/13/2014. Although I haven't posted on DJT regularly for like 5 years I've made it a habit of posting yearly updates. That said I've already said basically everything I've wanted to say so it's pretty obligatory at this point.

Lately I've mainly been reading light novels. It takes me about 4 hours to read a LN at this point although it varies by the book of course. I read about 15 LNs in the past month, and I'm nearing 100 books read after a pretty long time of only having around ten. I feel like one's sense of scale kind of shifts over time; I often see people really into their studies talking about like "Hmm do I need to read 5 VNs before I'm good? 10 LNs?", just having a pretty low sense of scale, but as time goes on those balloon into being like, damn, I need to read 300 VNs to have read anything at all, or like, damn, I need to read 1,000 books before I can be impressed. As for me, I'm not actually aiming for 1,000 books, but given how fast I read now I definitely don't think I'll feel any pride with how much I've read until it's in the 500+ range, which isn't something I expected in the past.

Incidentally, I don't say this from a "Learning Japanese" perspective so much as a "being immersed in the culture" perspective. I mentioned it before but after you can read/play things without a texthooker the whole perspective of "learning Japanese" really fades unless you stick to learning communities like DJT and really associate your identity with it. Knowing and using Japanese just becomes a part of your life; a tool you think no more of than your native language. So, when I say something like "I won't feel pride until I have 500+ books", it's not that I need to 500+ books to "learn Japanese", but more 500+ books to be comfortable as an otaku. The more time I spend in JP cultural spheres the more my ignorance burns. Just being comfortable in these communities and spheres requires, I think, requires quite an enormous time investment, perhaps decades. Again, not to understand the language itself, but to fully grasp the culture at large. It's like a "lurk moar" kind of thing, except instead of lurking a 4chan board you're spending a decade consuming immense amounts of Japanese culture (books/tv shows/etc) to try to catch up to all the cultural content you missed by not being born in Japan and naturally exposed to all this content.

All that isn't very relevant to those who don't speak to JP people though. I probably wouldn't if my job and other things didn't put me in a situation where I really wanted to talk to Japanese people (who don't know English of course). It's also overthinking it a bit, since you can quite easily just blunder your way through these spheres and JP people will be too polite to point out your idiocy half the time. Anyway, yeah, that's that. Nice to see you in 2021 DJT.

Honestly I don't really distinguish the two. It's pretty arbitrary, and it's not like LNs are universally easy/shorter, nor vice versa. They're all just books; the whole phrase "light novel" is a marketing gimmick to begin with. I just used LNs in my post to virtue signal my weebness.

Imagine being a young japanese voice actress, aspiring to do great things in the industry. You get an offer to voice a game. It's an eroge. You ignore the pit in your stomach that's telling you to keep your integrity and find a realer role. It offers good money though, and you need to pay for your tokyo apartment. And it wouldn't hurt to have a credit, would it? So you voice lead heroine in Cummy Wummies In My (Step)Sister's Tummy. You give it your all, and the director is so happy with your work. You even get to record the opening song. The game is successful. You have to record a drama CD, a full vocal album done talking about how much you love your big (step)brother and his cummies in your tummy. It's all going downhill from here. People start to recognize you. They shake your hand, and you can see in their eyes that they want to put their cummies in your tummy. Life is dark. You miss your inaka town. Was the cummies in the tummy worth it? Maybe you should just give up. There are other offers for more games though. You're by all accounts a success in the voice acting industry, only, not the one you wanted to be in. All because of some cummies in your tummy. Maybe the long dark at the end of the rope is looking enticing. The cummies in your tummy theme song plays as you step onto the chair and tie the rope around your neck. You let out a whimper, and kick it out from under you. The news reports say that you were not very well known, except for cummies in your tummy. It was a good life.
