you "corrected" yourself with a questioning intonation showing you were just guessing at the reading and still didn't know if you were actually getting it right or not

you have succeeded in memorizing how to read a bunch of words out of context and thinks this makes you fluent, but it doesn't

Reinvigorated after my first convo in Japanese

I've been learning Japanese on my own for about 9 months now and hit a big motivational wall. Just kinda half-assing and going through the motions. Until 3 days ago when I had my first opportunity to converse in Japanese via text.

My sister video called me while I was at the gym so I replied with a message saying that I couldn't video chat right now, but I could talk through text until I was finished working out. She told me that she was currently at a barbecue and there was a native Japanese guy there who was willing to practice with me. My sis knows I've been learning on my own and was thoughtful enough to reach out. The gym had really loud music in the background and honestly, I would have been embarrassed to practice speaking out loud in public, so I asked if we could text back and forth.

And so we did. I got to use the Japanese keyboard and practiced the basic conversational phrases. Hello, nice to meet you! My name is X. How are you? Where do you live? I love alcohol and sake. I visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka. I am American and I live in Y city.

And he would reply in Japanese and I understood a lot of it! Not everything he said, but context clues helped a lot. I understood where he's from in Japan (Yokohama), where he has visited, that he loves sake too. I learned his name, how long he would be visiting the current city where the barbecue was, etc.

Once it was over, he told my sis he was impressed with my ability to structure the few sentences that I did write and also impressed with my ability to understand him. It felt amazing. I was over the moon for the rest of the day.

I didn't mention but I'm faculty at a small university and they don't offer Japanese classes, BUT the larger university with whom we are affiliated does. So I registered as a returning student today and will be taking Elementary Japanese during the fall 2021 semester!

Thanks for reading! I figured this would be the best place to share!

I saw some comments on djt yesterday saying that watching anime wasn't studying. I found that incredibly silly and wanted to make this post today. I know that there many beginners in this subbredit, and many who are at or approaching the intermediate plateau. As someone who is fluent (arguably fluent - The meaning of the word fluent has changed so much in my mind during my journey) I hope that I can share some useful advice to those who are struggling at the lower levels.

Immersion is the most important factor in learning a language. This is fact and has been proven time and time again. Let's start this post by agreeing on that one point, and I will explain to you my experience with Japanese and how I got to my current level.

When I first began studying Japanese I took classes. We used textbooks and I went to school every day to learn Japanese for 3 hours. Our classes were conducted totally in Japanese and it was very helpful for getting through the beginner levels. I was acquiring the language naturally and organically by speaking with my teachers and learning through trial and error. We had our textbooks and they were very useful, but we didn't solely rely on those textbooks to learn everything. I stayed with that school for a year, and when I left the school we were in the intermediate level.

I was treating Japanese like a game if Tennis or Golf, not as a language. What I learned (the hard way) is that Japanese is not math you cannot learn it the same way you can academics. This is because we do not learn languages, we can only acquire them.

You can absolutely learn Japanese through anime, but this is just one area of a language. It is important to focus on all 4 key areas: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

So what was my method? I watched anime and dramas in Japanese (listening), I chatted with my friends and coworkers in Japanese (speaking), I listened to solely Japanese music (listening), I read manga and light novels (reading), I read visual novels (reading and listening), I watched the read the news (listening, reading), I kept a journal (writing), I was active in online communities (writing, but technically typing), I listened to audio books (listening), and most importantly was I stopped relying on English as much as I could and tried to live as much as my life as possible in Japanese. I tried to live as a Japanese person as much as possible. You can learn Japanese through all of these methods, but what's important is that you do them in combination with each other.

Here is my recommendation for new learner's: Take a class if you can. If you can't take a class, try Genki. You need to build a foundation of knowledge that you can draw from. Go through Genki and learn all of your basic grammar and vocabulary and kanji (personally I used Minna no Nihongo, but it's basically the same material). After Genki, I highly recommend the textbook 中級へ行こう because it gives you a good introduction to reading. After that it's time to ditch textbooks, you're now at the lower intermediate levels. You're ready to learn from native materials. At this point you can read that manga you have been interested in. Read it, and read as much as you can. It's totally ok if you find a word you don't know. KEEP READING.

I HIGHLY recommend visual novels. You can use software to rip text from the game and then you can hover your mouse over a word using an extension like Yomichan to see what it means. Try not to use that extension unless you absolutely have to.

the truth about grammar is that your brain doesnt really memorize the grammar rules for conjugations. your brain learns the conjugated words by heart.
lets say you hear the word かわない
your brain doesnt say "oh, based on the rules that i learned, that must be the negated form of かう" NO
your brain is pretty stupid. it just looks into your memory to see if you heard かわない before.

its actually the same with arithmetic.
you think you actually calculate 8 times 7 in your head every time it comes up? no, you simply remember that it is 56 because you memorized that as a child. as soon as you actually have to calculate something because you dont already know the result (lets say 13 times 17), you get lazy and whip out a calculator.
same with conjugations

>watch anime without pausing and it will magically make me understand japanese?
you still have to make an effort to try and understand stuff so you can't just turn your brain off and become fluent
there's also nothing wrong with pausing occasionally to look stuff up, just don't overdo it like a retard and take 2 hours for an episode it's okay to let stuff go that you can't figure out at your current level and just move on
what i personally did is, get a long "burner show" that i watched raw without pausing where i didn't care too much and then shows with jp-subs where i looked up words and grammar while watching
>if I understood right I just put 20 sentences with 1 unknown word in anki
sure you can do that honestly what you do in anki doesn't matter that much it's just a supplement to help you remember some words and make acquisition easier, feel free to reduce that number if 20 gets overwhelming
also do NOT stop watching just because you mined your daily quota of cards that's the most stupid thing you can do
just keep watching without mining, the nihongo doesn't run away and if it was important it will show up again somewhere else

you see conflicting information because at the end of the day as long as you keep watching and reading you will make it
some people pause and look up every single word and some people don't but there's no way to determine what's the objectively better way of going about it really
personally i felt like i made progress when i looked a lot of stuff up but it can get tiring and instead of stopping entirely at that point it's obviously still better to just keep watching without pausing
basically, play it by ear, keep at it and there's no way to fail really

the は isnt strictly necessary (e.g. this headline https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASNDP6TPTNDPPPZB00X.html)
the と is necessary because it's the way that 限らない modifies the sentence, because you're "quoting" the sentence in order to say [statement]と限らない
the は is usually used because は is a contrastive particle and its implicit that [statement]とは限らない is contrasting it with some other possibility that exists

i want [action]
want is the one who requires to change form to agree with I
so the [action] verb there being in the infinitive makes sense there because it isn't inflected

sterben = to die
but ich sterbe = I die

i dunno depends on how much you watch per day. the initial gains were gaining the ability to identify what sounds are said and noticing some words. later i started to reliably understand which dictionary form verb was said when i heard a conjugated form. and then from there consistently understanding sentences that fit into certain structures. if i paused and rewound i could probably figure out a lot of sentences but i dont care and just let it play. i recommend incomprehensible input with a ton of fast speech like galactic heroes for maximum gains. stay away from that baby shit unless you're feeling lazy.

Although we wrote this article so that even beginning speakers of Japanese can learn something, to really get the most out of it you'll need a couple of prerequisites. First, you should be able to read hiragana. Second, you should have at least a beginner's understanding of Japanese grammar. Having both will take you a long way, and you'll learn the basics of 込む compound verbs. At this level, actually using them may pose a challenge. But that's fine! On that fateful day when a 込む compound verb appears, you'll be more than ready for it. If you have an intermediate level of Japanese grammar or higher, you'll be able to understand the concepts and many of the example sentences. Plus, you'll be able to utilize 込む compound verbs with your Japanese right away.

込む(こむ)
to be crowded; to be packed

Whether you've been studying Japanese for a few years or a few months, there's a good chance you've come across the Japanese verb komu 込む. By itself, 込む means "to be crowded; to be packed" (jisho). If you know what a verb is (and I certainly hope you do), you may not find that to be very interesting in and of itself. Stick with it, though, and the Japanese verb 込む actually becomes quite interesting.
