I constantly feel that way myself, even after completing a year's studying this April. Make sure you know all the Hiragana first, then all the Katakana. If you happen to recognize several Kanji that's fine too, as long as you master the basics.

Contrary to what others may say, I've found Duolingo helpful in explaining concepts and introducing me to more vocabulary categories.

That said, the program still leaves lots to be desired. I had to print out Hiragana and Katakana charts, and even make up my own flash cards so I could focus on the ones I had a harder time remembering! You're gonna feel slow for a while, but as you progress it gets slightly easier.

At my stage it's simply remembering the words, and being disciplined enough to force myself try to use/re-read the words I learned weeks ago to minimize words forgotten. I still need to improve that part of myself... But all I can say is がんばって！

Hello everyone, I been very on and off with Japanese but I finally have the time to study way more and immerse myself a ton. I would say my level is easily N5, I know hiragana, most katakana but I do forget the ones that I don't see often. I've done RRTK450 at one point and I have finished it, I didn't have too many issues remembering when I was doing it, but I have forgotten most of the Kanji now though. However, kanji is a bit easier to attempt to read for me now by looking at the primitive elements. And when I listen to shows I can pick out like 5 or 6 words from ear alone but not sentences yet. I was wondering what should I do from here to improve? I don't have much experience with grammar besides watching cure dolly a few times but I suck at understanding the rules deeper the lessons go and it doesn't stick. Any advice is helpful. I prefer advice catered to around self-study btw.

It’s always good to try and keeps things simple. You need to pick resources for Kanji+Vocab (WaniKani/Kanshudo/renshuu/Anki flashcards), grammar (Genki 1&2, Tae Kim, Bunpro), speaking & listening (Pimsleur, Japanesepod101) comprehension. Possibly writing as well if you also want to develop that. Several of the resources I mentioned are paid, you can definitely find free resources to accomplish the same thing.

Most people waste SO much time by trying to find the perfect mix of resources. Just pick something for each main category, set very easily reasonable goals, and get started.

Hey, thanks for the information. I'll look into the resources you listed for Kanji+vocab. With anki i might keep a simple easy deck for mining. I currently have Pimsleur so I can check that off for comprehension and lately I try to always have a Japanese video playing and either listening actively or passively. I'm not too interested in writing because my target goal is to be able to read and listen to enjoy media and possibly converse in the future. I also have Genki 1 I had purchased a few years ago, if I can't find it ill look into just sticking with one of the other grammar options you listed. One thing I couldn't figure out with genki is how to start doing it though lol like from what page. Thanks again for the reply!

I’m so thankful for the people behind this site. Basically you can use Genki going through all the explanation, and once you get the practice stuff, use the site in place of the workbook.

Some people recommend learning the vocab of each chapter first before doing anything else, but I’ve just been adding important words to my study list and just moving through the chapter.
