i was the happiest with my learning process when i did subs2srs an episode of an animu i really liked - without morphman without any bells and whistels. i ate sentence by sentence scene by scene. this took me always about a week. when i was finished i watched the whole episode - with subs understood every single sentence perfectly - then without any subs and understood everything perfectly. i was max efficient. then all the i+1 hurr durr and anime cards and matt and jamals and what else came and i tested new techniques. nothing worked this comfy and effective.

I told one of my Japanese friends my major in University and used the term 国際関係 (こくさいかんけい) as I learned in Genki which literally translates to "international relations" and she gave me a funny look lol.

She explained that 関係 means intimate relations, so the term sounds a bit weird. I later looked it up and found out that one of the meanings of 関係 is indeed sexual relation.

This is the only term for this particular major I found so far but now I'm afraid other Japanese people might also misunderstand if I use it.

Should I keep using it anyway since 関係 has several meanings depending on context or is there a better alternative? Thank you!

as an ex wanikanifag, i think the worst thing is that it makes you remember very specific answers to these words and kanji. not only does it fuck you up during review time but it's actually counterproductive to learning japanese. you want to have a gist of what a word means, not a concrete english partial-equivalent. also audio sentences are king and fuck reviewing every word twice. i think you could make an argument for using it up to like level 10 for a foundation and then jump off and start mining your own deck, same with the core decks. the idea that you should do all 60 fucking levels of wanikani or all 6k words in core6k is pretty stupid. i'd say pick one and do it for 3 months absolute maximum then start mining

if you go absolutely as fast as possible you can complete it in about year which ends up being about 17 words a day but your time spent reviewing will be about 4 times longer than it would be in anki because you have to review radicals, kanji AND vocab and you have to review kanji and vocab twice. not to mention you have to actually type everything in. if you think this is efficient you're fucked but hey, whatever keeps you motivated i guess

Let alone Tobira. It might be the case of specific universities that this chat does not represent. But then again, judging from the final project, it looks like they might be halfway through Genki 1.
Even doing 1 lesson (genki) per week, you could finish it within 6 months. And use the other 6 months for Tobira, if self studying
