Started learning today, know pretty much nothing. I have about 2 hours of commute to and from work a day, which I intend to use for studying. In addition to all the time I can spare when at home. Starting off with learning the hiragana and katakana and then I intend to start the aniki 2k deck. Any and all tips, what worked for you what didnt work for you etc, are appretiated.

i learned it before japanese but not to the same level, mostly speaking. it may seem more difficult on the surface (tones, pronunciation) but ultimately it's far easier than japanese because it's much more consistent. it's easier to remember and apply consistent rules than the "feeling out" shit you have to do with japanese. simple example - 世界中. no idea why it's read like that, just gotta memorize.

I highly recommend 80/20 Japanese by Richard Webb and Essential Japanese Grammar by Everett Bleiler. The latter is great because it contains literal translations so a reader can understand exactly how a sentence is formatted. It also goes into clauses which is something I've yet to see in other grammar guides. Those 2 books alone will make it so any N5 babby can look at most sentences and understand the structure of them, only having to translate the words they don't know.
You should be able to reach basic conversational levels in just a few months with those and JLPT Tango Anki decks, which have the benefit of also including some N3 level vocab / grammar.
After that point, you should be able to translate basic things like lyrics, conversational sentences on your own just referencing a dictionary. TanoshiiJapanese is a good online one. This is where you will see serious growth with higher level vocab and grammar which will make non-basic conversational level Japanese make a lot more sense. If anyone spends over a year to get to this point, they're a retard. It shouldn't even take 6 months.

Katakana especially is the easiest part of the language imo. If you understand that it's non-Japanese words being translated in a way that it will phonetically fit with the rest of the language, then it should be a no effort experience. It took me 2 weeks to learn hiragana and katakana and I'm dumb as a brick. You should be learning in kanji as soon as you have an ok grip on basic kana, otherwise you'll have to practically re-learn everything.

I've been studying Japanese for a while now (3 years off and on), and one major thing I realized was that I'm making significantly less progress than study partners, etc. The main reason I'm making less progress from what I can tell is that I'm not consistently studying. I want to, but I can't bring myself to do it for some reason. I have my goals and all and I do study but I rarely study new content for quite literally no reason (I'm sure anyone else with ADHD can understand what I mean). I'm at a bit above n5 level, creeping into n4. I use anki but I tend to not consistently study as I often am distracted by things and/or forgetting to study. I'm looking to begin studying more kanji and completing n4, and I've also learned that studying vocab is similar to if not easier than kanji so I'm not worried about it. Should I make a hard-set schedule for studying kanji? How can I begin to study multiple (5-10 maybe) new kanji per day?
