I just finished episode 1. I'd absolutely rather have read the manga instead if I knew this is how the story gonna unfold but it's too late now, can't drop it. It's refreshing to see an MC with such a low self-esteem and childhood issues, can't sympathize with him though.
Looking forward to watching it every week from now.

For older films the Tomosaburo Wakayama version of Lone Wolf and Cub are excellent, someone already mentioned them. Might want to try Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter Trilogy (first is 1974) which are fun. There's a spin off series with a woman lead called Sister Street Fighter too. The Takashi Miike version of 13 Assassins from 2010 is outstanding, one of my favourite films of all time. Ryuhei Kitamura did an ultra-low budget movie called Aragami in 2003 that I liked a lot. If you want to see classical budo depicted then the old chanbarra movies from Daiei, Toei, Toho etc. are mostly an acquired tatste, but if you are interested I like Tomo Uchida's Miyamoto Musashi quintet.

It definitely leans more on the artistic side, if I had to boil it down, it's Tarkovsky meeting New Age seapunk, but it's not all abstract, there's a cute love story at the heart of the movie and the philosophical and spiritual themes are grounded in the characters. So it's definitely worth checking out, even if you don't usually like this kind of movies.

Also watched Angel Dust, Ishii's movie from a year prior, I highly recommend it too. Incredibly similar, formally, but uses all the same tricks for a different purpose, it's a more of a crime thriller in vein of Kurosawa's Cure or Fincher's movies, but similarly focused on building a mood and an atmosphere of individual and collective psychosis. Really digs into urban decay and alienation and translates it, psychologically, in a really evocative way. It just sucks that a movie this beautifully shot is apparently only around in potato quality. I would give up a kidney for an HD transfer.

I usually don't like anthology movies much because each episode always ends right when you're starting to be invested in its characters, but I have to say that the latest Hamaguchi is pretty good. Although I've been a fan of his since I saw Happy Hours, so I may be biased.

Stopped watching last year when they got rid of the audience, it was pretty much half the fun of the show for me. It also became kinda boring due to covid restrictions, like most variety, but this show got hit the hardest since it's all about showcasing regular people in interesting ways.

I'm on the last ep of the series and its pretty disapointing, the first few eps are just so hype and fast paced (it looked kind of like the matrix didnt it) and the ED is great and then it slows down and sort of falls apart. the lewd moments were nice tho

Definitely, check his films out, it's well worth it. His stylistic and directorial range is impressive, it's wild going from something like August in the Water to Labyrinth of Dreams and then to Electric Dragon 80000V back-to-back, while retaining the ethereal fingerprint and the way he uses sound is simply unparalleled. Then his 80s punk work is a whole another beast entirely and his 10s stuff is more uneven, but just as eclectic in experimentation (That's It being a highlight). And Angel Dust just has to be my favorite of his altogether, like a mix of Fallen Angels and Cure before either came out and with Ishii's unique brand of tranquil intensity.

Both. I think there’s a committee for the compliance BS on every TV network which monitors and censors things that would cause backlash. However it all depends on the celeb saying it. People like Hamada can do or say things that shouldn’t be said today and not just get away with it but it gets broadcasted because he’s Hamada and people expect such things from him. Like that time a few months ago he called 2 fat female geinins “pigs”.

Hyouchakusha started yesterday, anyone watched it? After watching episode 1, it looks like it's gonna be a weird drama. The story is written by Akimoto Yasushi (Anaban, Kyouen NG, Houteishiki) so it could go either way but I'm not gonna hold my breath. So far mysterious parts did seem interesting so it's worth watching for now.
It seems like Hemingway is connected to a cult of some sort and I'm a sucker for cult-related stories. When that old guy spoke in an unknown language to Hemingway, it gave me goosebumps. It reminded me of something, a manga, a novel, a game or a movie, can't remember what it was but I remember I've seen or read something similar about a Japanese cult where its followers have their own language that no one but them speak. I'm gonna keep watching it just for that.

Something like that. He occasionally comes up with interesting ideas but many times shits up in the middle and the final episodes.

Anaban was a very fun watch but had some issues, not gonna say what are they in case you decide to watch it.
Kyouen NG was an original concept. Pretty good, might be his best.
Houteishiki is one of the worst dramas I've ever watched in my life. He jumped shark not one but multiple of times there.
Akimoto also wrote lots of idol dramas starring his own girls from 48G/46G. Those are almost always have edgy and/or horror concepts and the acting is horrendous too since the cast is full of idols. Actually, Anaban, Kyouen NG and Hyouchakusha all have graduated members from Nogizaka46. I think he might have put on the word to cast them there.
