Hi guys. Are there any native speakers of English here?
Could you please tell me how well this Japanese person speak English?
How do you rate his English pronunciation on a scale of one to ten?
Please watch the video from 1:15.
Thanks.

>> No.3622623

Oh, really? That's great!
Thank you for your kind reply!

Probably around an 8. Some of his words sound a little weird but it's understandable and a lot better than what I've heard from other Japanese people.

>> No.3622674

8 I guess.

i only rated it a 9 because he used the wrong tense for a few words

8, very good but far from perfect.

I think most of the people here are native English speakers.

I'll give him a 7, he still slips into a slight Japanese accent every now and then.

English is my first language and he speaks better than me. I mumble stuff in a Vietnamese accent without noticing.

He's right though, most people on 4chan are American, and then there's of course the non-American native English speakers like the British and Australian which makes the number even bigger.

He said most, not all. Sheesh~

Also he's pretty good, but some sounds are kind of Japanese-ish. Like when he says 'you'

Better than some native speakers I know. He's a little choppy at times but that I attribute to him catching his breath from talking as fast as he does. His enunciation is great for the most part and unless I was actively listening for mistakes (only caught a handful), I didn't notice anything wrong with his grammar.

>> No.3622744

Native English speaker here. I'd say 8 or 9.

I could still tell it wasn't his native language, but there was no trouble understanding what he was saying. He clearly knows the language well.

If you want an example of a Japanese person speaking perfect English, look no further than Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kazuo 'Kaz' Hirai. (平井 一夫)

He's pretty good. I'd give him an 8 or 9. Clearly not a native speaker, but significantly better than many native speakers I know.

>> No.3622999

I'd give that English an 9/10.

To raise it to a 10 out of 10, he'd have to completely remove all the Japanese accent from his English. There was still a bit of accent with some of the words he spoke (I think the word "people" was one of them).

That slight accent allowed me to identify that he was a foreigner, but not his nationality - so it was pretty damn good.

>> No.3623008

Definitely one of the better I've heard. Better than my Japanese teacher, that's for sure.

His pronunciation is above average, but his word choices are still awkward. Jigger needs to watch some tv.

9/10, for real. Still noticable that he's not a native speaker, but he does a REALLY good job with pronunciation and he obviously understands the language very well.

He types around the same speed as what I do, although I don't think about what I'm saying when I'm typing, I just do it. I think he's doing the same thing, which must be difficult for a non-native speaker to pick up. So yeah, he's nailed it, basically.

My rating:

Asian. Out of 10.

Asian accent is still prevalent and if I listened to this blindfolded without knowing the guy is Japanese, I would've said he's asian.

I thought it'd be a video of one of those genius asians who can speak perfect Oxford English, but apparently not. So, it must be the case that at least one of the following are true:
1) The posters who gave you more than a 6 or 7 are dumb and/or have no idea what good pronounciation is.
2) It's one or two fags making the same comment
3) The OP is samefagging
4) Too many asians have polluted our ears and the commones believe that it's near perfect English.

He is better than most asian English speakers but he's no better than a person who's been living on this side of the Pacific for no more than about...3 years at most.

>> No.3624156

I don't think so. Yeah, you can tell he's asian but it's a step much closer to good English than many others I've seen.

>> No.3624500

Pretty damn close to 10/10.

Far better than an average person would need. IMHO, no point in improving further than that, your native language will probably start to deteriorate instead.

>> No.3624504

>your native language will probably start to deteriorate instead

Now that was stupid of you. You can't "unlearn" a native language.

>> No.3624524

That's pretty much fluent

>> No.3624526

>>3624504
Silly languagefag, you can. Just look at people who were captured during war and forbidden to speak their native language. 10 years and woops, you can't speak it fluently anymore at all. Native speakers are only good at their language because they practice it everyday, not because they learned it from day 0.

>> No.3624527

It's fluent but it still sounds like "Asian Dweeb"

>> No.3624534

>>3624526

Yep, better believe it. Speaking from personal experience, btw. Takes far less than 10 years for many people.

Well, I don't know if you can get to the point where you can't even understand most of what's said to you, but for sure you can "unlearn" how to speak.

>> No.3624890

I actually didn't have any trouble figuring out what he was trying to say... Which is more than I can say for most other Japanese trying to speak English.

It's a shame that he says "for you native speakers of English, American people". English (British), Australian, and Canadian people are native speakers of English too.

>> No.3626425

>>3626393
No no, "native speakers" refers to the British. He then includes Americans as other English speakers. Australia is left out because they interfere with Nippon's glorious whale "research" and Canada is excluded because lol Canada.
