Japanese uses some grammatical structures that are just...different from English, so learning the technical terms in English will be useful but it'll confuse you. I'll give you an example: adjectives. In English, an adjective is a word that describes a noun. It tells you something about it, like the color (*red* pen) or size (*large* animal). You can modify nouns with verbs (*flying* car), other nouns (*happy* day), and even entire phrases (the dad *who wasn't there*), but generally when we talk about adjectives we're referring specifically to the class of words that modify nouns.

When people talk about Japanese they tend to talk about na-adjectives and i-adjectives, but they only use those words because it's a convenient simplification that skips over the nuance and makes things confusing down the line. i-adjectives function like verbs, and are really "stative verbs" or verbs of *being* a thing. 赤い (red), 苦い (bitter) and so on are stative verbs indicating that something is that thing. na-adjectives function more like nouns, and you use the na or no particles (for reasons that I don't have the space or will to break down) to indicate that the following noun belongs to the set of things the na-adjective defines. ピンク色 (pink color) can be used as a na-adjective, and so you would use it to define "the group of things that are pink colored" and then の, the possessive, followed by whatever you want to say is pink.

Honestly you'd be better off learning about how the Japanese view their own grammar than focusing on the English terminology, since the English terms will just mislead you.

I had the opportunity to email Jay Rubin recently, and we had a lovely chat about his book "Making Sense of Japanese" (It was originally titled Gone Fishing, because Japanese drops the subject and object pretty regularly and also because he's a complete troll, but his editors made him change it when the fanmail got too..."fun"). Part of the conversation revolved around ways to grow as a student of the Japanese language, and in his opinion one of the best books for it is Japanese Language Patterns by Anthony Alfonso. I found the first volume in PDF form drifting around the web but haven't found the second volume yet. In total it's about 1200 pages of text, but it's one of the most thorough and comprehensive books on the Japanese language out there and it explains things more clearly than most of the people on YouTube ever could. If anyone has the second volume I'd love a link to it to complete the set.

Yes, because it makes it easier to understand than just looking it up in a dictionary and parroting what it says. If you want a functional understanding of the language and the ways it interconnects so that you can use it with nuance, you don't go word by word, phrase by phrase, never questioning why the な particle is used for adjectives or how it relates to the copula. You step back and look at the whole picture and see the beauty and elegance of its construction, and if you're just starting out you find someone to help walk you through it to make everything more transparent.

Asking why one language works one way and another language works a different way is almost pointless because the histories of those languages and the cultures they come from are going to be very different and those inform the words that are adopted and how they are used. The only reason Cantish didn't become the primary form of English was the choice of one particular king to be crowned in London instead of Canterbury. Comparison within language families is useful to understand their history, but they won't tell you a damn thing about the logic of a pidgin or creole. My point was about Japanese specifically, which aside from a handful of irregulars is one of the most well-organized, well-structured and logical languages on the planet. It's why I said "the language", not "a language". And yes, someone somewhere probably did sit down and make up rules for the language to impose upon it and make it that way, but it doesn't stop it being elegant in the end.
