They're not anime because visual novels don't have fluid animation.
They're more similar to manga than they are to light novels because every single scene in a visual novel is displayed together with illustrations.
Visual novels are not games because they don't usually have enough choices for them to provide the user with a gaming experience. The ones that do have some gameplay have it in the form of mini-games that last only a few minutes and are broken apart by hours of text/"plot".

I finally found out why ALL "immersion" methods are bullshit.

All immersion methods use the "passive" argument. I finally found a research which proved that you literally CAN'T learn passive. It is impossible. You need to be active to learn and the more brain activity you focus on learning, the better you learn.

Having a Japanese audio, video, or whatever running, while you are focusing on something else is retarded because you disrupting the other thing you are doing while literally learning nothing passively.

But you don't even need this as proof. Just test it for yourself. Do something 10 hours passive and then test yourself what you have learnt. Then do something completely different active for 10 hours. You will realize the passive 10 are literally erased and the 10 active learning hours were actually helpful.

Whoever uses the phrase "passive immersion" has literally no clue what he is talking about. "Passive immersion" is the solar friking hyperloop of Japanese learning.

I kind of started passively learning Japanese around 2010when I started watching anime. I picked up vocabulary here and there, but not taking it very seriously, you get the idea. As the years passed, my vocabulary knowledge grew more and more, and so did my pronunciation, recognizing speech patterns, etc. But still, I was a passive learner. When I finished my Bachelor's, I made up my mind to move to Japan to continue my studies, but I needed to take studying Japanese seriously, so I started attending a weekly class, learning Hiragana, Katakana, and some basic stuff like greetings and common phrases among some other stuff. It didn't last long though since the class was quite far from my place (+2 hours of commute on each side), so I quit it after 2-3 months. Then I started a half-baked self-study journey with WaniKani in conjunction with Duolingo. That didn't last long either. I didn't have the motivation/energy/push to continue, even though I was going to Japan in like a month or two. My hard work had finally paid off and I was able to get accepted into a nice Japanese university and I could do my Master's in Japan, but despite all that, I couldn't bring myself to seriously dedicate myself to learning Japanese. Then, I came to Japan. We had a 5-6 months intensive Japanese learning course, and I thought that would finally put me on the right track. We had like 3 classes a day, 4 days a week, and the class material was "Minna no Nihongo". The 6-month course also finished, but I had to force myself through it, intentionally missing many of the classes and not doing enough because of my lack of motivation/energy/strong mindset/willpower. I did improve a bit, but not enough at all. This was back in 2019. Now, I'm officially enrolled in my university as a regular student since April 2021, and over the last 2.5 years of being in Japan, I have self-studied for a total of like 100 hours at most. I'm somewhat better (like a mixture of N3-N4-N5), but I'm not satisfied with myself at all. I feel incompetent and useless for not reaching fluency despite living in Japan for close to 3 years. As you may have guessed from the title, aggravated by my lack of motivation and not being able to do even simple daily chores such as laundry or washing the dishes, I suspected that something may be wrong with my brain, and I was correct. I got diagnosed with ADHD. Suddenly everything became clear, all those classes I ditched for no reason, all the grades I missed, all the things that I ended up not doing, all the hobbies and passions I left behind for lack of interest, and many other things. Long story short, I have been having ADHD since my super early childhood, but I have only found out about it recently. This has been negatively impacting me in so many ways, including learning Japanese.

What I want to get from posting all these is advice from people who might be in a similar situation like me, i.e., dealing with ADHD while trying to learn Japanese. What are your tips and tricks? How do you motivate yourself? How to not give up after a few days when you do make up your mind to start?
