what does the engine have to do with being innovative? tons of aaa shit made with unreal are the exact opposite of innovative, I'd say 99% of them are derivative.
innovation isn't supposed to have finesse. dayz is jank as hell, but it is the forefather of survival and battle royale genre. and it wasn't even a game built from ground up with original assets, it's an arma mod.
same goes for dota, a custom map made from warcraft 3 assets. nothing in it is original, but it spawns an entire genre of moba despite being an "asset flip".
