Gaki no Tsukai SP's replacement, 笑う大晦日, had shitty ratings like the anons predicted on the previous thread. The average rating for part 1 was 7.2% and the average rating for part 2 was 5.6%.
In comparison, last year's Gaki no Tsukai's SP got an average of 17.6% in the ratings for part 1 and 14.1% for part 2.

It's very methodical and granular film about processing trauma, betrayal and an absence of closure, communication and the lack thereof and the process of artmaking serving as an intermediary in all of that. It's very conversation-heavy, with solid writing and performances, and a subdued, captivating direction. It's just a very well constructed narrative that earns its runtime. But on some level, I think I prefer Asako I&II from him, it's much rougher around the edges, but I thought the character work there was more impactful and the brevity and even tighter focus helped too.

Watched 初恋. It was... okay, I guess? Didn't do anything special but was entertaining enough. Feels like the kind of movie you'll forget in a week.

I thought Audition was decent, only other Miike I've seen. Maybe I'll check out 13 Assassins at one point if someone says it's much better than these two.

Just watched ninzu no machi / the town of headcounts (2020) and man it was a let down. interesting premise, poor execution imo. I was much more interested in the inner workings of the "town" and the side characters they spent the beginning of the movie showing but then the sister comes and derails the plot and makes shit boring imo. I thought the movie would be about MC and the few people he met devising ways to break out while finding out more and more shit about the tutors and what was really going on. Instead we do get an escape but its one of the most boring escapes i've ever seen then we get like 20 minutes of MC randomly falling for and raising a family with the sister

Sabu's Postman Blues is another great one. Personally I think it's his best. Unlucky Monkey is another good from him but maybe not as compact as Postman Blues.

Adrift in Tokyo is another great comedy movie. Has that odd slice of life feel to it despite it's fairly dark story.

Sono is a genius, he easily manages to make you laugh & cry in the utterly bizarre worlds he portrays. I recommend reading the original by Furuya Minoru (and all of his works, really) if you haven't yet. It will give you a different experience but just as haunting as the Sono adaptation.

Our Little sister is like the ultimate feel good movie. Still Walking is bit depressive as well, but not to degree of Nobody Knows and Shoplifters but it has that chill slice of life feel to it that I think it's well worth a watch.

His TV show Going Home is also great. It's slice of life series with hint of comedy.
