In b4 bashing of Katawa Shoujo and Yume Miru Kusuri because they're popular.

Stop that.

Here's a generic list.

Tsukihime (Earlier game from makers of Fate/Stay Night, personally I think this is better)
Yume Miru Kusuri (Pretty excellent, although you should save this for later)
Cross Channel (Nasu, the writer of Tsukihime of FSN called this the best thing ever, lots of people agree)
Kira Kira (One of the best commercially translated translated visual novels, there's a free demo for this)
Clannad (KEY's masterpiece, even if you've seen anime play this, there was so much left out of the show)
Utawarerumono (Has some RPG elements, also awesome)
Ever17 (Last time I checked, several different releases of this were on top-10 of Japanese ranking site. There's a reason for it)
Sharin no Kuni (Even if premise might seem generic, it's something much more)

Use http://vndb.org/ and http://vnddl.webs.com/list.txt

You know the Western VN fanbase is spoiled when Sharin's premise is considered generic.

In that case, Ever17's premise is "Some guys go to an amusement park. Twice."
I thought of Sharin's premise as "Scarlet Letter meets 1984."

>> No.3827166

Umineko's premise is one of the most generic ever.

>Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place in the year 1986 during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a secluded island named Rokkenjima (六軒島). The head of a wealthy family named Kinzō Ushiromiya, who lives on and owns Rokkenjima, is near death, and eleven of his family members arrive on the island to discuss how Kinzō's assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are five of Kinzō's servants, and his personal physician. After the eleven family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island and shortly after people start to get mysteriously murdered.

and that's exactly wath the author intended.

>> No.3827217

Start with something short like Saya no Uta, then try sth longer like Umineko, since you aren't quite used to visuals, they'll look good. I started with Umineko, something without eroge nor love (at least the 1st translated episode and 2nd with scripts), then the rest are harems, some pretty good and many other romances bad as hell

Umineko is good for starters, non H and quite long, the new episode is suposed to be translated this next week, so you'll be lucky if you start then, and DON'T think too much about the anime

Play Tsukihime. Best starter VN there is.
