39139742 No.39139742 [Reply] [Original]

Why are Japanese horror games/j-horror films so much more enthralling than their western counterparts? Like sure, I like shit like Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but Noroi, Uzumaki, Ringu, and the Guinea Pig franchise all leave me much more rattled at the end of the day.

>also praying for a j-horror general. i'd start it but idk how well it would be recieved.

I don't understand why japanese are scared of what they are scared of, but I am not scared of those things so Japanese horror always falls flat for me.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre got me much more than Ringu, but I still love Japanese horror. I feel like it has a very distinct style. You're probably more scared/attracted to supernatural horror, which seems to be the norm with Japanese stuff.
Check out The Witch's House if you haven't, it's free and it has an English translation. After you finish it, you can load your save and go to this cabinet to get the secret ending.

Because with western horror you reason to yourself that you can just beat the shit out of the maain antagonist whereas with Japanese horror you can't do that because it's intangible

I think it's because you're a japonophile, I saw people playing those games and the scariest aspect was apparently the elderlies.
Nothing scarier than a grandma apparently.

Sign of Vermillion. That film has a special place in my heart. It was the first thing I saw at the theater while the first pandemic lockdown was going on. And to make it even more atmospheric the theater was old and crumbling, had an ancient blood red light up sign on the exterior and was fucking empty. I couldn't even find any workers. But the film came on and I got to watch it in an old empty theater and when it was over this song started blaring very loud. It is was a memorable night.

Yes. Sadako is implying Kayako got knocked up with Toshio when she was like 10. It goes with the fan tradition predating the VS Kayako film of Sadako being always around and always being a complete bitch to Kayako.

This. Western horror is usually just some fag with mental issues, a stupid mask, and concentrates on gore and jump scares, rather than psychological horror.
(There is some good Western stuff like that too, but unfortunately things like HP Lovecraft don't translate very well to mainstream movies or games)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre really isn't comparable to other western slasher/horror movies. It has a documentary and home movie feel to it with little to no gore, yet it still makes you really unsettled with things like the twitching of a body and its sound design is chilling

it's not exclusive to J-horror. Korean/Thai horror has the atmosphere that most western movies just don't capture, and that's perfectly fine. Western movies do gorefests and disgusting that most asian films don't do well either.

Sometimes it works out though, take a look at a japanese horro movie's hallway scene, vs a western movie's take on it

Lol it was just the first thing I saw that kinda fit the theme, since it looked like the kind of night when something spooky could happen... The replies that got are pretty funny though.
(I actually find it more cozy than anything and it's just some random picture I've had saved. I used to have it as a wallpaper on my phone, since blues and blacks look good on this particular screen.)
