HF is an allegory for Sakura's sex life. When she was a young girl, Tohsaka Sakura was kidnapped from her home. Her family, after months of searching, declared her dead. In fact, however, Sakura was closer than they thought - she was sold to the Matou family, who ran an illegal brothel in their basement. Sakura worked as a prostitute every night for several years. This would help explain her submissive, non-confrontational personality.

Matou Zouken is Sakura's pimp. To the rest of the world he, Sakura, and Shinji form a normal family. But behind closed doors, their true relationships are revealed. Sakura (along with the others of Zouken's prostitutes) is rented out to a client for the evening. The clients are free to do what they will with her, provided they stay in the basement and leave no scars or bruises on her body that long clothing cannot cover. On slower nights, Zouken and Shinji take their pick of the litter and amuse themselves. Shinji's favorite is Sakura.

The penis-worms are how Sakura sees her clients. They are horrible, painful little beings that wish her no good. HF shows Zouken as being made of the worms because it's true. He depends entirely on his brothel and its clients to live.

Emiya Shirou is a boy at Sakura's school. Sakura daydreams regularly about leaving Zouken and living a normal, one-man life with Shirou. When Shirou falls ill, Sakura jumps at the chance to nurse him, seeing it as her only chance to be free, if only for a while. This explains her persistance in showing up at Shirou's place to help out even after he recovers.

A week or so before he fell ill, Shirou visited the Matou brothel. After spending the night with Sakura, he immediately felt guilty. How could somebody from his school be forced to do something like this every night? He began to take more notice of her at school, and did his best to make her smile. When Shirou got sick, Sakura went to his house to nurse him to health. Zouken approved -- after all, the boy was a customer; shouldn't he be encouraged to pay another visit?

Archer is Shirou's ideal. After getting to know Sakura, Shirou began to believe that what she was forced to do was wrong. He wanted to be able to protect everyone forced into that kind of situation. Later, he would refine his ideal to only protecting Sakura. These two ideals were naturally in conflict, and the latter one won.

Rin is Sakura's sister. After the statute of limitations on Sakura's kidnapping case ran out, Zouken sent Sakura to the local high school as a student in order to hide her identity (Shinji keeps her under his thumb to keep her under control). Unable to turn to the police, she has spent all of her free time attempting to free Sakura from Zouken. There's only so much she can do, though -- and it takes her teaming up with Archer to make any headway.

Dark Sakura began as a way for Sakura to escape the emotional pain of nightly rape and torture. Every night when the brothel would open, Sakura would slip herself into a trance and wake up as another woman. In the morning, she would wake up and attempt to play off the night's activities as a bad dream. After all, nothing that bad could happen to a girl that good, right? After a while, Dark Sakura began to disapprove of her situation. She killed Shinji and Zouken, and attempted to kill the one other person who could tie her to that life -- Shirou.

Avenger is Sakura's unborn child. The father is unknown. SHirou wants to abort it (since it would be the last remnant of her life as a prostitute), but Sakura's attending physician, Kotomine Kirei, feels that it's his duty to welcome all new life into the world. Naturally, the issue was unresolvable with words. The ensuing fistfight was described by hospital onlookers as "badass" and "awesome".

Saber is Kiritsugu's old friend from Britain. She simply picked a bad time to meet Shirou.

Lancer is Kiritsugu's drinking buddy. Aside from being awesome, he's not very important.

Ilya's a random rich girl that crushes on Shirou after meeting him at the market. Berserker's her bodyguard/butler.

Caster is Souichirou's wife. She has a penchant for dressing up.

Assassin is one of the Matou brothel's oldest patrons and a good friend of Zouken.
