My first brush with it was a video of Touhou 6 gameplay on YouTube some time in 2006, I think. I read /jp/ sometimes in the years following, but avoided Touhou stuff like the plague because I figured my friends would think I'm a lolicon if I got into it. I only really got over that in the last couple of years and figured I should try out the games.
I emulated the PC-98 games but didn't bother beating any of them, and then tried Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Had lots of fun beating it and am still working on Perfect Cherry Blossom, so I guess I'm playing the games in order. I still haven't read any doujins but have since gotten into the music.

There was no captcha back then, so they would use spam scripts to derail threads with Touhou pictures. I would debate them and argue that ZUN was a talentless hack. Once /a/ got split into /jp/ I missed the Touhoufags so I went along with them.

First exposure was from the funny ice woman fumo (cirno) from memes about 2 years ago, cirno was the first 2hu i knew by name, later i learned about reimu and marisa. However this really didn't spark my interests and i didn't even know where the funny ice lady is from or what touhou was.

The second exposure was when i saw an "anime" character in one slide of a powerpoint lecture from my medical school, i felt that i saw this character before and sure enough after extracting the image and reverse searching it turned out to be the character known as "Tenshi", this time i got really curious and looked up many 2hus on the touhou wiki and then my interest really took off when i discovered the music (holy shit the music!). Still haven't played any games yet tho.

Little journey. Initially, it was purely through the music, in a way that was completely disconnected from the girls or the anime aesthetic, not like Bad Apple or Geddan or Japanese Goblin. Instead, it was that Touhou has a history with black MIDI tracks. I found the franchise a decade ago through this exact video:

From the comments on the several "Death Waltz" Synthesia videos that are out there, I learned that a lot of it was from Touhou but still wasn't sure what exactly Touhou was, so Google brought me to /jp/, where I was shown this video (by the same guy who would later go on to create the "prangent" viral video):

From this, I played the games (white refusing easymodo and consequently not beating them back then), participated in silly shit, and learned a little about art & music. I never really got into the whole waifu or daughteru thing, but the "devil's little sister" being this little girl who was "more powerful than the devil" was, on a conceptual level, something that sounded cool as shit to me, which got me wondering what else I'd find in the games.

There was a sort of death & rebirth here, though. I took a long break after Moot made some statements at AWA that shat a bunch of people onto /jp/, then the pandemic several years later brought me to computer development communities, which brought me into making aesthetically pleasing Web sites instead of the sanitized corporate shit, which brought me to Serial Experiments Lain communities, which had an overlap of people that brought me back to Touhou. This time, I'm actually reliably beating & EX-clearing games and reading the print works in chronological release order. I can appreciate a good or otherwise charismatic fan work, but most of my engagement is still going through the primary works, which there's surprisingly a lot of. Also, Fumo plush, which I do not buy unless I've beaten her in-game.

My friend came over one day to show off the mechanical keyboard they had built for themselves. During this time, they showed off a little game they were working on. I can confidently say that I was introduced to touhou the natural way rather than the degenerate way.

I heard some of the music, and realized that I recognized sakuya's theme from years ago, not knowing it was touhou, then I realized I knew cirno's them, and then I realized I somehow had heard most of the EOSD soundtrack without ever even knowing it. so then afterwards I started playing the games, and THEN i started looking at touhou porn unfortunately.

Whilst I've seen Touhou here and there before, the way I actually got into it and learned what Touhou is was via the Wild and Horned Hermit Manga. I was simply scrolling through Mangadex trying to fine something to read when I found it, it's cover peaked my interest and I decided to give it a try. I found it very enjoyable, though a bit confusing and was caught up by the end of the day. I liked the Characters and Story but I enjoyed the most was the Lore and World building. Gensokyo is an amazing place for an Advature Manga I tell you. Anyhow I wanted to see more so I went to Google to get extra Information on it, only to find out that WaHH was only a side Story of a big Franchise. I looked up a guide on how to get into it and started playing the Games, once I finished those I decided to read all the other Printed Materials before getting into the Fandom aspect of it (Fanart, Fan Anime, Doujins etc.). I then re-read WaHH to understand it better and I liked it even more. To this Day it is my favourite part of Touhou and Kasen remains my favourite 2hu.

My frist exposure was around in the late 2000's probably around in 2009 (cannot recall correctly) when I came across with the iconic Ronald Mcdonald video, however, it was until around in 2014 a friend on Steam told me about Touhou and introduced me into the games, I have a certain nostalgia for the early PC98 games (specifically SoEW and HRTP) since I wasted weeks trying to 1cc'ing it back then.

Been watching doujin works and listening to the music too, ¡Help me Eirin! is my personal favorite. There is a unique feeling when playing the early Windows era games that is not easily replicated, but that warmness and sense of mystery is so great and it represents the isolated world yet vivid place that is Gensokyo.

I originally got into Touhou because it had a whole lot of cute girls in it. I later discovered that some of the girls have ties to Japanese mythology (or are gods themselves) and I love mythologies and folklores so it captivated my interest.

For me the music was the onset. More specifically hardcore aranges. Youtube just autoplayed a bunch of music and at one point a specific touhou hardcore music channel got into the mix. I didn't really notice util I began to recognise the same tunes over and over. When I finally looked up what it was I realised that I had already seen dozens of touhou girls posted before. So by the time I realised what touhou was I had already passed the point of no return. Sneaky but I love it.

Back then on Youtube I watched stuff like Bad Apple and Night of Nights, but I never knew Touhou at that time.
At some point I got to 4chan. A few year afters I then went to /jp/ for the vnts threads and saw a lot of 2hushit, but didn't really bear it much mind back then either.
It's when I played MUGEN that I started to get interested in Touhou. MUGEN had a lot of well-made Touhou characters and upped my exposure of them a lot.

After getting interested, I played 6 but didn't 1cc it. Then I went and 1cc'd 2hu 7 and fell in love with the franchise.

I really have no idea why Tuhu attracts these people. Akiba Hobby still sells & internationally ships all of the official Windows games EoSD and beyond. The games are credited to Team Shanghai Alice, still earning royalties for purchases. The shipping will cost more than the games unless you buy several games in one shipment. It's totally understandable to pirate copies to play them, but pay the piper at some point, especially if you already have hundreds of dollars to blow on plushies, figurines, or, heaven forbid, gachas. Back when I got my first laptop as a highschooler back in 2011. I simply browsed 4chan, actually did my 2 years of lurking /b/ before posting and stumbled onto /jp/ and discovered touhou. I didn't really browse at the time but I downloaded a touhou launcher that sadly can't find for the life of me anymore and started playing, I started off with 98 but eventually interest waned and didn't bother getting into the doujin scene or winder community which like accounted for my lack of interest.
I wanna say about 3 or 4 months ago I migrated from /a/ onto /jp/ just to see how things have changed and was saddened but it got me back into touhou again and i'm a lot more immersed in things now.
Sadly I suck at bullet hell and struggle on normal much less hard so I consider myself a secondary.
I also recently got into writing slice of life stories about Reimu and am committing myself to doing one everyday on the Reimu threads, I have no greater aspirations as far as that goes as its just a hobby.

I remember seeing bad apple in like 2008 when I was in middle school and thought it was a cool one off thing, but didn't realize it was touhou and how huge the series was until I visited 4chan in 2014. I first saw Bad Apple & had no clue what I was looking at. The first Touhou game I played was Luna Nights; it was on Game Pass, & I barely knew who the characters were.
