It's about nine years ago I started learning it for no particular reason; mostly because of a whim "I'm watching a lot of anime so why not try to make the time I spent watching anime useful by learning Japanese at the same time?"

I have now reached N1 level Japanese (which, as I discovered now, is still miles away from actual fluency) and the additional value it has provided to my life is approximately zero. I have no intention of ever moving to Japan, and I have a STEM degree that gives access to jobs that pay many times better than any job involving Japanese.

My enjoyment of Japanese media hasn't improved either. I am still missing about one word every five sentences when watching anime (well, I didn't count, but it feels like that much); if I wasn't trying to maintain my Japanese level, I would prefer just reading the subtitles. Light novels have about four unknown words per page and my reading speed is about half as fast as an average Japanese native. This situation doesn't seem to be improving anytime soon.

In fact, my interest in Japanese media has waned over time. The main reason I am still watching/reading Japanese stuff is a sunk cost fallacy "well, I spent over 4000 hours learning Japanese and it would be a shame to lose that effort due to language attrition." The books I am reading in Japanese right now aren't really boring, but if I wasn't learning Japanese I would probably not be reading their English translations either; if language wasn't a concern I would probably be reading some (English translations of) internationally famous novels instead of restricting myself to Japanese books only.

After having sunk so much time into a language it becomes really hard to just pull the trigger and forget it, even though I probably should.

Over the past nine years, there have been a grand total of three-ish untranslated Japanese works that I was glad I was able to read. All other Japanese works either have a translation available or are not more interesting than your average English work. This was totally not worth the time.

If I could give my younger self advice regarding learning Japanese, then it would be "Do not learn Japanese. It is not worth it."

What percent of your "seen" cards are Young+Learn in Anki? On Core 2k/6k I've got 1140 Young+Learn and 2670 Mature, so about 30%. That seems pretty high and my daily reviews are getting brutal. I don't have time for reading so I've been thinking about dropping Core 2k/6k, even though I'm almost 2/3rds through. The decks I've been thinking about switching to are Anonymous 5000 and VN Core 2.3k, which do you think is better?

Same. I hate the term "city pop" to be honest. Coz it's not a genre, it's an umbrella term that just lumps together about 5 other pre-existing genres together, and it's almost erased those real genres from the public discourse entirely.

Every time I play a visual novel, and spend hours, days, talking to a girl, getting to know her, falling in love, and then she leans over, blushing, and tells me she loves me too. That always fills me with such joy. And it always becomes a memory I cherish for a lifetime, and that gives me strength when I think I have nothing left. Nothing else compares to that wonderful moment.
I suppose you could read a translated version (I read translated visual novels for many years before finally studying Japanese) but the difference in impact between reading the words "I love you" on a screen and hearing the woman you love say those words to you in her own voice is as vast as the ocean. It's like the difference between noon and midnight.
Learning Japanese has improved my life in too many ways to count; if I was to try to list them I'd run out of characters and have to spread it over multiple posts. But that's the best one. That one special moment. It makes it all worth it.
If I got hit on the head and forgot all the Japanese I've learned, I'd learn it all again to hear her says those words to me just one more time.
