I actually really like the art in the PS2 Higurashi, besides the backgrounds. Umineko has more emphasis on character expressions but I don't really think it would be hard to translate those expressions with a good artist at the helm.

They all show plenty of emotion anyway, trying to enhance the sprites wouldn't help.
If the ps2 higurashi is any indication then using different sprites would only make them appear less emotional.
