jisho (RADKFILE, actually) lists the radicals for 廃 as 一 儿 广 癶. I think 一 should be 二. The radicals for 発 are 二 儿 癶. Also, 廃 has 12 strokes and 発 has 9, and the stroke orders are what you'd expect if 廃 actually had 二.

What are some beginner light novels in Japanese
I've just finished learning hiragana and I'm learning katakana tho I have been recommend to learn kanji along side it. I have been recommended to read some light novels for kanji learning, what would be a good starting point. (side note: I haven't learned translations yet, I have learned a few kanji from the n5 book and word wise from subtitles from anime, but thats about it so far)

To answer your question, they're not replacing き for こ in these words, they're just etymologically related.
起く is the old Japanese form of the verb 起きる. 起こす was originally the causative form and 起こる was the intransitive form. In short, the reason 起きる doesn't match is because the aforementioned words are holdover derivations of the verb 起く.

I guess as a bit of more serious advice, two very relevant points here:

The particle と, whose main use is embedding clauses in Japanese, similar to how English uses "that."
Xとする to treat as X
Xと言う to say "X"

I see a lot of beginners who think と means "and," when that use isn't really as common. Luckily quoting と is disgustingly common so you should catch on quickly enough.

The only other potentially confusing grammar there is continuative やって(い)た and 言って(い)た instead of plain やった and 言った. Looks like just another bit of noise if you're still in early stages. Keep going on you can do it.
