They seem to reproduce very quickly with children being born in just an afternoon tops so maybe they can just keep trying until they have ones that make it to an age where they are more solid. I was under the impression that this was more of a Pokemon type deal where that's all they can say but it's not necessarily what they are thinking about. They seem to be portrayed as diligent and honest when they are capable of speech, cutting down shittier Yukkuri when they step out of line.

I know lots of people don't like Yukkuri abuse but I think that if they were real, people would be just as cruel to them as they are in the comics if not more so. Kids and teens are notoriously cruel and especially in the case of teens, they tend to have phases where they pursue edgy activities for the hell of it so I don't imagine the sight of a group of youths huddled around a family of strays having a laugh at their expense would be an uncommon sight. I don't think grown ass adults would be above it either, given the habit Yukkuri have of pressing people's buttons at the worst times.

As a fellow enjoyer, I think it's some sort of mental illness. People who don't like abuse are quick to say as much but I don't think it's the same kind of illness that they are imagining it to be. We, speaking generally based on my own experience, don't want to hurt anything in real life. Wild Yukkuri seem to have it the best of all. Their only real problem is being stupid and having kids before or during winter or getting too close to human settlements and those are problems of their own making. Sure people might go into the forest looking to kill them for whatever reason every now and then but for the most part, they are well out of the way of the average person looking to vent some frustration or have a little fun at their expense.

House Yukkuri, while safe from the elements, still have to be careful about being seen or heard or they will be killed by the residents of the home and humans still put out traps for them too. In a particularly small house or apartment it's probably only a matter of time for them.

Gotta be this one that was about gaslighting a Marisa is being unable to tell the difference between dreams and reality by horribly abusing it, fixing it up, and returning it to its loving family. At first it thinks the abuse is all a bad dream but then it slowly starts creeping into "reality" until it overtakes it completely and there is no longer a happy "reality" to return to. It ends with the Marisa warping into a gruesome looking shell of itself because it can no longer stay awake or sleep.

Bit convoluted but it was certainly unique.

Yukkuris sure have come a long way from being Disembodied versions of Marisa and Reimu and into being disgusting and pretentious pests that are (somehow) edible
I had an idea for a story where there was a "Easy Illness", where that Yukkuri would turn into their "Original Counterparts": No insults, no desires, no thoughts, no anus, no children, just wishing for everybody to Take It Easy; this would of course, diminish their popularity in both Abuse and Caring since this would ruin their reputation of "living manju", but even as Manju they started tasting worse and worse, making them more forgotten over time, and maybe, just maybe, they would reach Gensokyo that way, back to what they once were.
But what am I talking about, this thing's been going for a decade and a half at this point, as long as Touhou and those weird-ass TTS Videos on NicoNico/BiliBili still exist, there will be someone to turn them into these abominations that you want to torture.

That's why I liked this one in particular so much. There is actually almost no physical abuse in it and it's entirely the Yukkuri essentially killing itself trying to hold on to happy memories of the past. I also really like the way the Yukkuri itself is drawn.

The art may be a bit lacking from a technical standpoint but I really love the way this artist draws Yukkuri. Particularly how inexpressive but dopey by default they look. Makes them feel more like a type of animal.
