She's cute, you can't deny it. I'm truly intrigued by her.
And I'm still not fully convinced that Satsuki Rin and Comiket Circle Girl aren't the same. The mention of "wanting to play an erhu" in TH6's omake is what makes me believe they are the same

The only thing that ZUN! said about her was when some baka gaijin asked and his response was something really lame like "oh that, it was indeed unfinished" .
And recently he also said she was supposed to be a 3rd character, got scrapped but he did made a design.

Honestly the design doesn't have anything that looks kirin, unlike there is some indirect relation like between erhus and kirins or something else I'm unaware of.
The circle cut girl, especially with those colors looks more like a fusion between Marisa and Reimu to me, if she's a kirin she should at least have a horn or something
The wiki points out that maybe she could have been a nurse, although it is a bit of a stretch, but the only thing we really have is her name and her shot types being wind and flower themed.... maybe.

I wish ZUN would clarify something about what he had in mind for the character someday.

I always thought it was a horse (thanks Monster Hunter) until I read the wiki page and saw it has the head of a horned dragon and the body is that of a horse or deer or ox (something 4-legged with hooves).
The healing association is likely a result of people blending them and unicorns together.

It is very likely that there was nothing besides a name and MAYBE a vague concept of a nurse/kirin because of a throwaway line Marisa says in the final game. ZUN has never commented on Rin because she effectively never existed. He even gave another unrelated character years later the same name which shows he has no intention of bringing her back.

I would not be surprised if there isn't even character concept art or a textual description of Rin in his archives.

That's not Rin. That's a random shrine maiden ZUN intended to be the mascot for his circle. Two (2) Japanese fans asked about this already. Apparently there is a sketch of Rin in existence but it was never posted anywhere by ZUN and it isn't even in the Touhou Exhibition going on right now. It's probably lost forever like EoSD's source code.

Also by now she IS Rin. ZUN will never do anything with the character as far as we know, so she's the fans' character and that's her appearance
