haven't lurked for a couple of years or so
what happened to matto?
last i remember
> got rekt by a fat brazilian
> got doxed as having two gay dads
> got caught boasting about "whaling"
> did a false DMCA to have criticism taken down
> tried to disguise his ugly gf behind a mask and sunglasses, which didn't work
what happened after that?
the critic who got DMCA'd promised to fight back, did that happen?

* Potential form is used more when speaking and
~できる when writing (the latter construct being wordy to actually say)
* Potential form is more informal while the other is more formal (unsurprising given the previous point of spoken vs written)
* Potential form is used more with everyday verbs while the other is used with more "logical" verbs

Hello /djt/!

I've started with my Nihongo journey and I've done the first step (or should I say step 0, preparation) and learned Kana. I've done it by following both Hiragana and Katakana courses on japanese-lesson site, so I know how to write them too. Idk how useful this will be, but I though that I should at least know how to write Kana even if I don't learn how to write Kanji. Now the real studying can start.
I've read a few guides (djt main guide, the moe way guide, and a guide that some anon from a thred in /vt/ made https://pastebin.com/pwVJh73t)) and their ideas of what's the best to do now. I know I probably shouldn't overthink it and just start doing it, but I would like to hear your thoughts and experiences.
The general idea I got from the guides is that for the next steps I need to (not in order):
>Start learning Kanji
Learning them separately, so Isolated kanji (mnemonics) method or maybe Radical approach (I heard bad things about this). If not, then Kanji through vocabulary.
>Start learning vocab
Core 2k/6k, Core 2.3k, Core 3k or whatever else, or/and Tango Decks.
>Start going through grammar guide of choice
Some grammar guides that I got recommended are: tae kim grammar guide, Cure Dolly Japanese from scratch, 昨日 Sakubi: Yesterday's Grammar Guide, Learning Japanese The Manga Way, Making Sense of Japanese by Jay Rubin, Basic Japanese: A Grammar and Workbook by Shoko Hamano and Takae Tsujioka
>IMMERSION
Probably the most important part of learning, but maybe I should wait just a tad bit till I get to know some elementary basics, I'm not sure.

With all that being said, I would like to hear your thoughts about my next steps. What were your methods for learning kanji/vocab/grammar? Do you think it was the right way? Would you advise for me to do something different?

Learning will all come from comprehensible input, but you can't comprehend anything at first so it doesn't hurt to try memorizing some common words for a couple weeks before you start immersing. Immersing with a dictionary is the fastest way to learn more words but it's pretty painful to start immersing from 0
Kanji through vocabulary 100%
Regarding grammar study you seem like the sort of person who will naturally end up spending some time reading a healthy amount about grammar regardless, so the only thing I'll recommend is don't waste too much time racking your brain trying to understand sentences you're just not ready for yet. And everytime you don't understand a chapter or example in a grammar guide just ignore it

i think going through part of a kanji course (rtk, kklc, wanikan... pick your poison, don't get too autistic about it) is helpful to get a basic familiarity. later when you know more words i recommend learning how kanji are actually structured. most kanji are made up of a sound component and meaning component, and knowing about this is very helpful for guessing the readings and meanings of words without having to anki them.
>grammar guides
anything works, manga way is my recommendation. the jay rubin book is good but it's not a grammar guide, more to get a different perspective on how shit works when you know basic japanese.
>maybe I should wait just a tad bit till I get to know some elementary basics
it's probably true that you don't get much from incomprehensible input, but i think this is a dangerous mindset because you'll end up procrastinating until you're "good enough" for immersion (hint: you'll never be until you actually start immersing). at the very least try reading a manga page or something every once in a while as you're going through a grammar guide.

So start with vocab (kanji through it) and some grammar alongside just to get basics and then basically immersion is king (I should continue with anki for vocab and maybe reading more grammar, but focusing more on stuff I stumbled upon while immersing).
>you seem like the sort of person who will naturally end up spending some time reading a healthy amount about grammar regardless, so the only thing I'll recommend is don't waste too much time racking your brain trying to understand sentences you're just not ready for yet
You read me like a book. I'm an esl and when I was learning English in school I was the type who knew grammar very well and would do excellent on the grammar tests, but when it came to vocab and speaking... terrible. I only got better (I'm not saying I'm god now, just better than I was) when I immersed myself by being on internet, watching youtube, streams and, what's very ironic, watching anime with English subtitles.
I'll try not to waste too much time on grammar this time. Thanks for advice, I appreciate it!

After a couple months of immersing when you start to slightly understand things your vocab acquisition will rapidly accelerate to the point that any prebuilt anki deck won't be able to keep up (you'll keep revealing new cards in the deck with words you already know), that's where you switch to mining deck only. And yeah, you'll acquire the kanji patterns (including sound components and meaning components) through acquiring words and their readings.

honestly i don't think it matters that much in the long run but i'd just go ahead and do it all at once. studying vocab before knowing kanji will just be a matter of rote memorization until you start noticing patterns.
>Are you talking about radicals here?
people will use the word "radical" to mean the components kanji are made of, but it's a bit misleading. "radicals" come from the way kanji dictionaries are sorted - every kanji has one radical. but a kanji's official radical doesn't necessarily tell you anything useful about it's meaning or reading, and kanji can have other components that aren't in any list of radicals you'll find. anyway, i wouldn't worry about any of this until you really get into reading books.

that's because there's a literal plateau. the better you get, the more words you need to learn to level up. the way to get better is to put in more hours, not less. it will feel like you're not improving because progress takes a long-ass time, so you can't let improovement be your main motivation.

the learning curve is worth it

for beginners i think jalup beginner (for grammar and learning to parse sentences) + core 2.3k (for vocab) is fine. maybe a little bit of a kanji writing deck

that being said people who use wanikani are at least studying. most anons who are on here are slacking off. me included.

Infinitely easier.
>most tenses and pronouns match, so you can concentrate on where things differ and take note of exceptions
>you also don't have a gorillion onomatopoeic/mimetic words, so no ガクガク, ガリガリ, ぐるぐる, ちくちく, ぼーっと, パッと, etc.
>no kanji barrier so you can start reading right away. note: after learning the moonrunes, nip feels like learning any other language, only slower
>tons of shared lexemes ('root words') and affixes (prefixes, suffixes)
>far fewer words without straightforward translations
>tons more of shared adages/sayings
>you have number and possibly gender, which makes for a seamless transition compared to than getting used to counters
>you have conjunctions; you don't have to learn "conjunctive form" (連用形) and stuff like および, ならびに, また, そして, and you don't have to re-learn how express a disjunction (AかB, または, etc.)

Is there a point to mining vs just doing a jpdb deck (assuming it exists)? Like yeah on one hand you need to see the kanji before it's useful so it's implied you need to do the whole jpdb deck, but there's no guarantee you'll see a kanji again in a relatively short time frame after mining it
It seems sort of like a proactive vs reactive situation but neither are ideal because one frontends the work while the other is delayed and not necessarily useful while you read
Does mining increase learning in a meaningful way since you're actively interacting with the word?

A good portion of it comes down to knowing what word comes next, and being familiar with the sentence structures employed. Your mind fills in the words you missed, especially if they're function words.
The real test is being able to process what you're reading, draw nuances, be able to come up with antonyms, recognizing structures, etc.

btw has anybody noticed a sharp decline in reading speed over the years? i used to tear up 500-1000+ word novels in a few hours but after being forced to read for a school program that only benefitted dummies, my reading speed went way down because i stopped reading anything other than web novel slop for years. it's kind of depressing especially because i've got an older brother who reads like 10x faster than me and says he just looks at the shapes of words to read them, sort of like the memes that cut words like in picrel

No. furigana is the practice of adding kana to text, and predates ruby. Ruby is just an annotation that accompanies text in east-asian languages.

2.3k. it's optimized for weaboo coverage and frequency. you can do 1,000 words or the whole thing but either way you need to get cracking on reading and mining yourself early enough and not just like do a ridiculously huge core deck that has tons of low-freq vocabulary you can learn yourself when your vocab acquisition skills are better

learning shit that doesn't improve your general comprehension ability when you're still training your brain to acquire vocab sucks and 2k/6k has a good amount of useless jargon

I'm setting up Anki for the first time and I added Straight Rewards plugin. On the page of the plugin (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/957961234)) it says that I need to shift-click Options to change them. I did just that and after saving if I check it, with shift-clicking again, I see the changes, but if I normal press Options it still shows unchanged settings for plugin. Is this normal? Does normal clicking Options only work for "non-plugin" options?

Have fun teaching articles. I couldn't explain those even if I tried. And wildcard verbs like get, and phrasal verbs, and stuff like why people "have" hair instead of "doing" it.
And just for kicks, you'll love teaching the difference between have to, must, ought to, and need to. And can and be able to. Especially when explaining why you use one over the others.
And what about "seems" and "appears" (連用形+そう, 普通形+そう, らしい, みたい, etc.)?
