Ever wonder about why she puts up with Mai's bullying time and time again? It's because of Yumeko. When she was a little girl, Mai used to push her over and freeze her neck constantly, and every time Yuki tried to get the adult in charge to rectify the situation, Yumeko would give her an ice cold stare, colder than Mai could ever make with her magic, and tell her that good little girls didn't complain. And that was that.
So the bullying continued, day in and day out, until finally she had had enough and threw a fireball at Mai.
Who promptly cried out in sheer glee as she called out for help, then manipulated Yumeko into believing that Yuki had attacked her for no reason.
The spankmarks on her ass were so deep she couldn't sit down for months without being reminded of the injustice wrought on her.
At some point, she started blaming herself for all of Mai's sociopathic harrasment.
Maybe she really was just a useless fire mage, who couldn't shoot danmaku to save herself.
Maybe she really was a constant embarassment to her mother, Yumeko-sensei and all the rest of creation.
Maybe she really did deserve to be treated like the little worm she was.
Since then, she's been getting more and more starved for positive reinforcement. Even something so simple as commenting on her outfit can be enough for her to hug you out of sheer ecstasy from being acknowledged as worth something to someone.
Of course, then she reminds herself that the compliment is probably only out of pity, and she's making a fool of herself by reacting to it too strongly. And if you were to insist that she really does have a cute dress and hat on, Mai would be quick to interject with how you shouldn't be complimenting insects like that, before dragging Yuki away quicker than you can deny the accusation of Yuki's species.
She might look and act a little more normal than the others, but reality says that Yuki is a deeply broken girl.
