many words are completely self-explanatory even when encountering them for the first time. if for example you studied 余る and 念 properly, you would mostly likely understand 余念なく the first time you see it and also correctly guess the reading. otherwise it's somewhat like saying you know what "mono" and "chroma" mean but when you see "monochromatic" you at a complete loss as to what it could be.

i've been thinking a lot about how to minimize time i spend with anki in favor of reading and listening. don't laugh, but i came up with reading cards. word definition cards or sentence cards are a great way to spend more time with anki than actually immersing.
every time you come across an unfamiliar word, you can easily look it up in a dictionary or just skip for now. most importantly, it solves the problem of not being able to read a sentence with that word smoothly
and you don't have to choose between numerous possible definitions or make a card for each one, you will learn them all eventually
