I did Tooka's first, and it ended up being my favorite because it reveals the least about the mystery, but it was enough to get me hooked and coming up with all sorts of theories about what's going on in the story. After that, I did the other minor heroines' routes first because I wanted small reveals before the big ones. I can't even imagine how different my enjoyment of the game would have been if I had done Remi's first.
It's interesting how much the route order can impact the experience of that game. Though I agree with >>45461957 that there is too much repetition, maybe fewer routes or a fixed order could have helped with that

The main difference about doing Remi's first and Kuuko's "last" is that (not a Remi route spoiler) Kuuko is a bigger mystery. You can figure it out her basic premise pretty easily in other routes, but not her overall deal.
And, yeah, I think they could have probably cut Tooka entirely as a character and had the game be better for it. She's cute and all, and I liked her route, but she doesn't really add much.

Every time they mention this they've hinted at some sort of sinister reason why they can't tell her, which is ominous considering how considerate they've been to her so far. Finished Amane's route. That fake death cry was brutal. I was surprised to see a post-credits scene, not so much at what was shown. All in all this route was the most exciting yet and Amane was great. I need a break from Sharkness Life though. Undecided if Remi or Kuuko next. Remi has 5 scenes compared to 4. With the 3P she has 6 while Touka only had 2. Idiot director.

If you love CRTs and playing games on one makes you feel warm and fuzzy and happy I say go for it.
Otherwise, unless you already own one, no. I don't think it's a sensible investment.
I mean obviously the point of reading a VN is the story and maybe the gameplay and how the dithering looks is never going to move the needle much on that.
But even ignoring that, CRT shaders are already fantastic. The footage in this webm is being rendered in realtime. The software that does this is free and you can download it right now if you want. I believe it comes with the default Retroarch install. Very resource intensive but very impressive.
This is how good CRT shaders are right now. Imagine how good they'll be in ten, twenty years... CRTs are beautiful pieces of technology and I don't think they'll be truly obsolete for a very long time, but for the needs of the average gamer or especially VN player I think it's reasonable to say that CRT shaders will be more than good enough.

I hate that too. It's interesting how different engines handle backlog loading. Some only save a number of lines from 10 to arbitrary number like 180, others save the entire backlog down to the very first sentence. With backlog jump I've had games that wipe the backlog but only after a load from menu, so you could save/load/jump while reading, then next time you open the game and want to jump back you can't. Or backlog jump is disabled in backlog if you use skip, you can't save on choices but due to skipping you can't jump before the choice so you have to carefully skip before the choice. And the weirdest one of all: how it's done in the save file. Game has the entire backlog and jump feature with tiny save files, then you play that one nukige that wipes backlog and has no jump, but the save file increases for every line of text you see so that the final size per save is ~10MB.

It's not really a nukige at all. The main focus is on the characters and the drama. You should really play the trial if you want to get a feel for what the game is about. The whole premise of the game is that it's trying to deal with the theme of incest, but realistically, like 'how would someone actually react in real life if they were truly in love with their sister?' The whole premise of the game is that the protagonist does not believe that he can get together with his sister unless he convinces the world that incest is a valid form of love, because if he can't do that then them getting together would just make his sister miserable.

The fights in Rance I are piss easy and grinding takes maybe 15 minutes. The exploration and little details to everything are a fantastic experience that the digest doesn't have. The only bad parts about original Rance are playing blind, the gambling RNG, and trying to do everything even with a guide there's unused items. The digest is good to read after playing it and I think there were even new CGs and story details not in the game.

For Rance 2 I'd recommend playing the original, then reading the digest. After Rance 3 play the remakes and for Rance 2 the kai version.

Rance I is the shortest but even with a guide and talking to all NPCs it can take a few hours. I wasted ~1h on the optional casino thing. If you follow the guide strictly and don't waste time you can maybe finish in 2h. Rance 2 and 3 are longer. I think even the Rance 2 digest takes ~45 minutes to read and that's without any gameplay.

I'd recommend doing that.
Rance I is really short, you can play through it in one sitting if you use a guide (you probably should, it isn't very fun) so there's no reason to skip it. It really helps put the series in context.
Rance II and 02 have the exact same story and gameplay so you're only choosing what music and art you want. 02 just got rereleased as freeware recently if you care about that.
Rance III is a legitimately very good RPG and nobody should skip it. Particularly the ending section is one of my favorite parts of the whole series.
IV, 4.1, 4.2, and Kichikuou have no remake so you're stuck with the originals no matter how you feel about them.

If you do plan on playing the originals, get the hint discs too. Not to help you beat the games, as online guides are much more useful, but each of them has a small extra bit of story and art.

A lot of people say you need to play the remakes for context but if you strictly follow that logic you would also need to play Little Princess, Little Vampire, Kaeru no Panyon, Daiakuji, Galzoo Island and the whole Toushin Toushi series as all of those games end up tying into the plot to one degree or another.
And since nobody bothers doing all of that, so I don't see why anyone should feel that they "have" to play the remakes so they have "all" the context.

I agree but even if you specify all that stuff is tied to the plot on different degrees. By putting all of them together you make it seem like Galzoo Island is as important as Little Princess or Toushin Toushi. The last two are very important in how you perceive certain characters and situations the first one is not. People who say you are gonna miss context if you don't play the remakes would probably also recommend Toushin Toshi before IX. But they wouldn't recommend you fucking Daiakuji before VI. That being said I agree even if 03 is really good and I feel anyone should play it at a certain point.

I would have rather they cut that gimmick and made those sequences just normal CGs, and instead funneled that budget into something else more worthwhile (like a full-length Peruru route, sprites and voice acting for mob characters, animating one or two key h-scenes for each main girl, etc.). The game would have been better for it, if a little less unique.

All in all, I had a lot of fun with it. It's no exaggeration to say that it's everything I've been looking for in a nukige. If the production value was a bit higher and a few minor flaws were corrected, it would be a 10/10 in my book, which isn't something I ever thought I would be saying about a nukige before reading this. Really glad I picked it up, I already know I'll be revisiting it a lot in the future for some fun and exotic faps.

Definitely not vanilla. I'd consider the game like a sampler box for weird stuff. Erotic torture is kind of the tagline, but in a light-hearted way. If you're mildly interested but not already into stuff like bondage, bestiality, sex toys, weird magic setups, futas, etc., I'd say it's a perfect game to explore a bunch those things to see what you like best.

Alright, finished VenusBlood Ragnarok, the first direct sequel in the series. Frontier must have been really popular.

The troops movement as well as the legion system got removed, and went back to fighting 1v1. That's a shame, I liked ganging up on the enemies. At least they kept the ability to do multiple fights in one turn. The one-fight-per-turn in older games really made replays a pain.
Small turns limit returned once more. I like unlimited turns more since some of the later stages got pretty long on harder difficulties. I don't know why they even limited the turns, the higher materials can't even be farmed now and only be obtainable as stage rewards, so it's not like I want to dilly dally around.
Previously, new units automatically unlocked whenever you obtained a new medallion, now you need to do research for them. I said research but really, you only need to pay some resources plus medallions cost and it's instant, so it's kinda trivial. Some units are related and sort of like tier-up versions of their kouhai. It's a fun side thing to do.

The event list got streamlined a bit. I can now just pick the good or bad routes for the heroines. They probably knew that the players got tired of juggling stats in Hypno, and I agree with them.
A change that I hate is the sounds when picking a choice. Previously, there's sounds when the choice changes the heroine's affection, and in Hypno pop-ups for the law/chaos points. Here, there's sounds for the latter situation and nothing for the former. Made speeding through events a chore. I needed the wiki open at all time.

The plot happened some 500 years after Frontier and dealt with its version of energy crisis. Felt like they've been on this plot point a lot recently. Gaia had Ether research to combat Sutra and Espirit decline. Hypno had the BBEG sucking up the planet's energy.
The scale here felt smaller than previous games. Well, I guess they can't do the end of the world every time.
I think they got a new game engine, so they didn't want to do too many things. Or maybe I'm just spoiled for contents after the FGH remasters. Also I think they had a new art direction. It took a while to get used to.

We had goddesses once again. I was mildly disappointed since VNDB didn't have their corrupted forms, but once the OP showed them, I was hooked again.
Most of the main characters here were descendants of Loki and co. It's been a few hundred years so they're all like cousins, so no more incest galore like the OG. At least there's finally a (half-)sister heroine. Took them only a decade. And she got the most development too, as expected of the main heroine.
My favorites were Fana and Sigyn. Their problems intertwined with each other, so it's like 1 route splitt into 2. Also the former was the series' staple blonde loli, and the later succubus-turned-wife's route was pretty sweet.
Many of the endings were about having kids or leaving descendants, and I think it's a nice conclusion until it warped back to VB 0 anyways.

My biggest problem with the game was Loki. Not that I disliked him, on the contrary, I liked him a lot. He made me really nostalgic for Frontier and I had to keep reminding myself that this was Vali's game. Therefore, I felt kinda disconnected from Vali, and didn't really invest in him enough to care for his events.
When I saw some old heroines from Frontier showed up, I was worried that there would be some "fraternizing", and apparently the wiki guys were too. Luckily my fears were unfounded.
Well, I loved the scenes of Loki and his girls. His fates were bittersweet, but his dynasty was long gone. It's time to go anyways.

So I've finished the White Album 2 extras set before CC, in this order.

「彼の神様、あいつの救世主」
Ultra short, shows Kazusa and Setsuna's first impression of each other. Might as well read it.

「雪菜姫の受難」
Also ultra short, shows Haruki being Haruki as we learns about Setsuna's baito. Pretty good actually.

「雪が解け、そして雪が降るまで」
Really, really good. It's about Kazusa of course, but also fleshes out side characters like Takeya or Chikashi. Certainly makes you like Kazusa. But skipping it is also a good option imo. I'd say Kazusa is the least explored of the main characters in IC, even with the second read, so not learning too much about her might be more interesting.

「祭りの前～ふたりの二十四時間～」
Very good. Lets you learn about Setsuna and Kazusa's relationship. The prologue and epilogue track add a little but to the end of IC. Might be skippable if you think the end was just right as it was.


「祭りの後～雪菜の三十分～」
Small extra that fleshes out a scene in IC. I would do the second read before this. Was pretty good.

「祭りの日～舞台の下の物語～」
Focuses on side characters during the festival live. Nice, but probably the most skippable thing here. Gets a bit too "expanded universe" with things like Setsuna's mom chatting with Kazusa's mom.

「Twinkle Snow～夢想～」
Interesting if scenario. Good ending.

「届かない恋、届いた」
Nice extra about the song and what Haruki, Kazusa and Setsuna think about it.

「歌を忘れた偶像アイドル」
Jesus Christ, so good. Setsuna is evil, but she's cute, so it's okay./spoiler] Perhaps not reading it and wondering what Setsuna has been up to would have been interesting. But I'll never know.

The novels are worthwhile reading in this form, as NVL VNs. Leaf could've went just text on screen it would have been okay, but they did more. Music and sound effects adds a lot of some scenes.

Finished Akino's route. From the first route I'd had the impression that she didn't really like Takagi that much or think of him as her boyfriend since she never actually said anything beyond "wait until I quit this job", so I was surprised by how much affection she actually had for him in her mind at first and how long she (mentally) resisted against Takahashi. I wish she'd resisted more though, she could've put him on her blacklist after the first time he made her uncomfortable and I bet if she told Takagi what happened he wouldn't even mind and would support her. Since her work involves constantly putting on an act, I guess it's only inevitable that pretending would gradually become more natural and she'd eventually lose her original self leaving only the persona of a perfect slut who knows how to please everyone and can't live without cock. Super depressing that even that falls apart in the end though. Also someone mentioned a game with the わたし/私 plot point a few threads ago and guess this was it.

Picrel was the scene that stood out to me the most, which also made Takagi's actions way more pathetic. He thinks she wants the ring and works his ass off to buy it but she was thinking about how unimpressive it seems to her now that she can afford it when it seemed completely out of reach in the past. After this point they never really understand each other again and are on completely different trajectories, which is so sad.
