From an empirical standpoint there are many evident flaws, but no game has surpassed Star Ocean 2 for pure enjoyment in my experience.

My favorite characters were
Bowman:Would have been more tolerant of Precise for reasons of cute if not for her terrible Eng VA. Also because everyone thought he was useless back then and I just wanted to kick ass as a pharmacist who spams pills.

Ashton: Didn't everyone love him? The girls liked him for their yaoi and the guys liked him because he was funny and had hilariously bad luck. Plus barrels.

Chisato: Naturally, my party strategy was "hit as many times as possible in the shortest interval of time," so Bowman, Chisato and Ashton flooded the screen with damage numbers.

I actually used Claude very little, and preferred having control of Rena. As far as girls you could get endings with, I really only liked her. She was as cute as Precis and less irritating.

Most of the female characters besides Opera and Celine were uninteresting to me, but Opera precluded me from having Ashton, and Celine became useless later on.

But redundancy aside. Xenogears and Arc the Lad 2 are my favorites. Xenosaga in my opinion had the best (i.e., DEEPEST) plot. And Grandia 2 and Digital Devil Saga are tied for best battle system. (Disclaimer: Digital Devil Saga is the only Atlus JRPG I've played so take that with a grain of salt.)

Arc the Lad 2 in particular is probably the most underrated JRPG of all time. Many people never played it because Arc the Lad 1, 3, and 4 were average.

Persona 4 is way better than Persona 3 in terms of gameplay. But, the two games are completely different in story. The characters are different, the tone of the story is different. Even the music direction is completely different. Persona 3 is way more my style.

I don't see the point in people getting in arguments over which one is better, though. Nor do I see the point in trying to troll the large fanbase. It's all apart of the SMT franchise, which is my favorite franchise out there. It's always doing something different and creating new ideas while staying true to the elements that people love about the series. It's way more original and creative than most of the more popular JRPG series.

I wasn't entirely sure I'd like P4 when I saw how brightly colored and retro all the aesthetics were. One thing I really appreciate about the new Personas that the older ones lacked is a very unified aesthetic/style. No other RPG series really strikes me as truly "contemporary" in design, but there's something really modern about the way those two RPGs are handled. I miss a lot of things from P2 though, so I just hope those go into SMT games.

Personally, since I've played a lot of Grimn'dark, Persona 3 was great but I definitely preferred the characters and optimism of P4. The mood was a lot more uplifting and pleasant for me.

I love Chrono Cross to itty bits for all of its aspects except for its story. Seriously what the hell was with the whole Lynx thing? Your Father became a cat because you were scared of cats, went crazy, time traveled, killed Marle Chrno and Luca, switched bodies with you so that he could do something cliche, and then you turned back into yourself with willpower, and you killed your self Father.

I like the Wild Arms series.
I don't know if it's the best, but the first one I played was 3.
The fact that all the main characters used guns was a first for me. Also, I'd never played a wild western JRPG before so that was exciting. The fact that tons of villains popped up out of the woodwork whenever the last one was beaten was a bit corny but I liked Beatrice at least.

I felt that WA3 was basically FF8's junction system done properly. I could arrange the Mediums in any way I liked.

I've played 3,4 and 5.
My impressions of those games are:
3: My favorite in setting. Of all of them, it's by far the most Wild Western. The female party leader, though she's a little dumb, makes it stand out, and I liked Clive because it's rare to see a happily married father in a JRPG party. Whenever you think it's going to end, a new villain appears. Translation was kind of shitty sometimes though.
4. Not as bad as everyone thinks it is. The characters aren't as interesting but the boss battles with the main villain organization each had their own interesting gimmick. It's very... shoneny. The music in this game is God Tier at times, even eclipsing 3.
5. A lot of fun, fairly entertaining and colorful party members. Love triangle is kind of unnecessary and the game is pretty unsubtle even for WA, but the battle system is like 4, only substantially improved in every way, combining it with WA3's mediums.

You have to be rather diabolic to design a pairing system that requires certain characters to be always to together during battles in a game where the position of your characters is so important. And, not satisfied, you might mix in a bloodline system which can render your whole army useless during the second half of the game.

Im not that much "into" JRPG:s, but my favorites would be the Disgaea series and Final Fantasy 6 (might be a little amount of nostalgia mixed in).
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth was also very, very fun.
Maybe I'll try playing some of the ones mentioned ITT I havent yet played (even tho I only have a modded PS2, DS, PSP and emulators)

Mario RPG's story was so much better that even comparing the two is an insult. Each new town was amazing on its own, going from the volcano to the cloud city to goddamn underwater ships with dead shark pirates. It had infinitely more content, ranging from riding down rapids on a barrel to composing music for a Russian toadstool. The puzzles were also infinitely better.

The only thing Paper Mario has for it is slightly better graphics and a more bland playstyle. It doesn't even have Geno.

Dragon Warrior 3 on GBC was my childhood, basically. I had watched my older sister and her friends playing RPGs all of my life, never being allowed to play. The Game Boy Color was the first game console that I could call my own. DQ3 wasn't the first RPG I had played, but it was probably the best.

Sure, it's an early Dragon Quest game, so there was no character development or anything like that, but it managed to make the gameplay elements of RPGs (the part that everyone hates) pretty interesting. Fast battles, different types of parties, slightly more advanced strategy than "cast ultima on everything." It even let you roam the world fairly freely, past a certain part - you had shit to do, but you could do it in whatever order you wanted. Even now it's one of the few RPGs I can play without being bored out of my skull in between cutscenes.

yeah I was exceptionally pissed, because at first I thought "oh, it just fell somewhere when I was switching games..." but no, it wasn't under the PS3 or down between the parts of the TV cabinet... nothing.

Then I realized that it's disappearance was curiously right about the same time I had some people over, friends who brought their friends who I didn't know too well. Next day, Disgaea 3 is missing. Makes me so exceptionally angry that someone probably swiped it from me while I was taking a piss or something.

I was also relieved of my copies of Bioshock, Zelda Twilight Princess, and a few others- but that was from a separate theft incident when I was living in this shady apartment.
