Gaijin is a word for foreigner. There are no weeaboo connotations to it. Koreans are gaijins, Russians are gaijins, Chileans are gaijins

Nah. They may say it as a compliment but it's pretty insulting. It's like if english wasn't your first language but you mastered it or know enough to speak fluently but I would cheer like it's a major accomplishment if you just said "hello" even if you've said it to me everyday.

I lived in Japan for three years. I miss it every day. ...except for the x I'd get whenever I tried to go to the wrong snack/nightclub.

>> No.4578751

Here's a basic breakdown of life in Japan.

- Close relationships are rare in Japan. They only people you will become friends with are people you work with or people you grow up with. Once you're no longer working with them or living with them they don't care about you anymore. This ties into dating as well. The only reason a girl will date you is because you're dependable and you can support her. If your a foreigner she might date you or hang out with you so she can learn about your culture or learn your language. A guy dating a foreign woman would probably be just for sex because he's going to be too busy with work. If you do get a relationship you're not going to spend time with each other.

- When working in Japan you can do just quality work but if you don't work as long as other guys or you don't participate in company excercises/parties then you're not considered a teamplayer and therefore less efficient.

- People are very polite. This is both good and bad. A person may completely hate you but still be very nice to you to your face. They may also say something is okay even though it is not cause they don't want to hurt your feelings. They will also give you backhanded compliments which seem nice but are quite insulting.

- Being that they are polite and won't tell you if something is wrong there are places that do not allow foreigners. That way they don't have to waste time having to deal with you and explain the rules.

- Drug laws are extremely harsh. Having a gram of cannabis on you will lead to arrest and detainment. If you're a foreigner after you serve your time you will be deported. You will also lose your job and be socially shunned. This also goes with being openly homosexual. You will lose your job and being socially shunned.

See "backhanded compliments". It's rare to have just blunt racism but it happens. But you'll probably get a lot of compliments for not doing anything special. They'll basically treat you like a child.
