Regular moege self-insert protagonists tend to be too normal for me to self insert into or root for. High schoolers are usually just normal guys with a group of friends, while adults tend to be well-adjusted salarymen that get along with their coworkers, not loners living paycheck to paycheck or from one government gib to another. I'd prefer something more relatable, though I also like games just dropping the self-insert aspect altogether and having a properly characterized protagonist that you can root for instead.

I'm a bit surprised there aren't that many games with social reject protagonists becoming happy through the power of love, considering the target audience.

They tried that with hoshiori's protagonist and it was criticized because he was too much(handsome, good boy personality,loving family, actual above middle class family) and had too much characterization, so much that even one route is entirely dedicated to him following his dream while the heroine gets the role of 内助の功 and assist him as much as possible for that, all of course while they keep progressing their relationship.

The problem with your suggestion is that because too much characterization is "risky" for these kind of stories, you can't make a protagonist have too many problems, therefore you can't have these "I CAN FIX HIM" routes for the heroines(See what happened with Re:Cation when they do it while the protagonist is really basic). Of course there are many which has those ones that try to break the mold like he first example i gave, ATRI, while being an all-ages the protagonist is basically a loner autist MC who gets healed by his loli robowaifu, which pretty much fits your description, and its possible because the protagonist its an actual character.

アフターフェスティバル is like 50% of the game, it's set after Kokoro's route (who's last on the ladder in the main game).
I've not played them, but the side routes seem to be set during the festival and probably rely on you having knowledge from kokoro's route in the main game.

It's hard to recommend visual novels that are similar to Popotan because what makes it great is how unique it is.
I do know of one title that fits all of your criteria: もえスタ -萌える東大英語塾-. It's English teaching software for otaku. Really nice interface, excellent music (I hum its songs constantly), happy silly tone, and a good bit of lewdness.

How much being aware is too much? You can check amaenbo by the same developer. Protagonist is definitely aware but he actually loves the girls. It was incredibly hot. If you want protagonist acting like there's nothing wrong then you'll probably enjoy titles from Iris.
