>> No.4944599

Family Project is quite old so it's special to a lot of erogamers, it'd have been a lot of their first eroges. The standards for newer games are higher. Not that I've played Steins;Gate, but almost everything on the top of EGS has a good reason to be there.

Of the first Big Budget VNs that had much content and decent slice of life.
If released NOW, it would be quite lower, sure.
Most likely, stuff like Kannon and One, maybe even Air would not be perceived that well now too(though Family Project is higher than all of these).
Finally, it may just appeal to Japanese fans more.

>> No.4944629

Protip: Umineko is just average shit, Japan agreed and Japan loves Higurashi much more. Also Chaos;Head Noah has better ratings than Umineko, just to present you some context.

>> No.4944637

>>4944629
Ranks in the 80s are not exactly 'average' in the first place, and I think episode 6 has a higher ranking, but yeah, it's nowhere near the top.

75,69,79,77,72,72 on average score and on median it's not better except that two episode manage to get a 80 but that doesn't make the series leave the 70s range.
And then again I bet many of you just went there and made an account to vote your shitty game with a straight 100 because otherwise nobody would have voted for it.

All right I'll bite.
Truth to be told, I haven't actually played GSS. I just learnt of it due to the constant /jp/ hype about it back then. I also translated it during the wee hours of the morning. I tried to force myself to translate at least a hundred line before I go to sleep. This resulted in half-assed translations for some of the sentence. I got really sleepy at some parts I ended copy-and-pasting the atlas output and mashing them together to sound natural just so I could be done with it. And then there's the fact that since I haven't actually played the game, I lack context so I don't know if they're talking about a name, a place or what leading to more mistranslations. I apologize for that.

I didn't really plan to complete GSS, I just thought that if I revived the project, some other (proper) translator might notice and jump in. My theory is that its not that we lack potential translators, its just that most of them don't think they can tackle it by themselves. By casting the first stone I hoped to ease the way. In the end I guess I was wrong, or maybe they got scared because of TLWiki publicly shaming me and doesn't want it to happen to them. I don't think I hurted the project though since it was dead from the start.

Family Project is a genuinely great game, which is why it still gets high ratings even from people who play it today. Though it is true that it's not something the West would be into (not enough fighting or moe).

One and Air also still get good ratings, and Kanon isn't even that highly rated.
