What is this?

/jp/ has started on a project to translate the visual novel Hatsukoi, one of the highest rated according to the Japanese.

Are you in need of translators?

Of course! Anyone with knowledge of Japanese (and English) is welcome to join in and start translating with the simple and easy-to-use REtrans™ Web Interface now with Accelerated AJAX Technology.

Are you in need of editors?

Definitely. You don't even need to know Japanese to help improve the English text, so your participation is encouraged.

What is the length/progress/ETA?

The total length of the content is approximately 32k lines. We are at approximately 65.6%.

Seriously, in just a quick glance over the first ten actual lines of Anzu, I saw two lines missing punctuation, two missing commas, one completely misplaced comma, and one misspelled word. You're averaging about .5 errors per line.

I checked the first ten lines and found the spelling mistake and one comma mistake.

In all honesty (not trying to be hateful or say you're trolling or anything) if you want to be taken seriously at all could you at least tell us where the mistakes are you find? Even if you don't correct them yourself if you could at least tell us it would help better the problem and is more productive than simply saying "YOU'RE ALL WRONG AND YOU SUCK" incessantly.

Run-on sentences. Put "that" between them, use a comma splice, or rewrite them.

But seriously, that's why I have no interest in going through the whole thing, and that's not even including the technically correct but incredibly awkward or poor phrases. An English teacher would weep blood trying to edit it, and that's just the first 12 lines... plus what you already fixed.

Thank you so much for your help.

When translating things a lot of people (including myself) tend to write awkwardly because we're trying to match it to the Japanese sentence. Some of the comma errors may also be because some of the translators were trying to match the punctuation to the original for every single thing.

I understand that the script seems very rough and difficult to edit but any contributions possible (even if you don't edit it on the actual site and just point out something you find here) are greatly appreciated.

Once again, thank you very much for taking the time to post the corrections to the script!

>> No.5007304

>some of the translators were trying to match the punctuation to the original for every single thing
Clearly, one extreme would be to just replace every single word with its English equivalent, and the other, to convert even the cultural artifacts to western ones. The original decision was to leave the Japanese punctuation in, so that might have something to do with it. I'll make a poll on which direction we should take, and TLwiki will be a good place to put the results. You're the head translator, so I think you should give some opinion on this.

Whatever happens, keep it consistent. The first page of COMMON currently has a mix of Japanese and English punctuation.

>> No.5007353 [DELETED]

>>5007304
I was stating that we should keep it consistent from the beginning, but lolita said that any inconsistencies would be fixed in the end. (´ω`)

Anyways, my personal opinion is that all 、!?。 should be replaced with ,!?.
However, 「」 and ~ look better in Japanese I think.

In the end though, this is only my personal opinion, so if anyone thinks differently please post your thoughts!

The end is approaching, so now would be the time.

Done.

>> No.5007631 [DELETED]

>>5007531
We on the TLWiki projects generally use all English punctuation and accepted grammar conventions except for the tilde, whose usage is determined by its vertical position on the font. All stuff in the gray area, including phonetical commas, is up to the translator and editor.

As an example, I would change !?。 to simply !? because the period is extraneous and I've never seen such a construction before.

I pressed the button at the bottom and it sent me to some page about making your own surveys. So did it submit or not?

>> No.5007902

I tried to vote too but I'm not sure if the survey submitted for me.

Like Lennar said, I think you guys should replace everything with English punctuation except for the tildes. There should be some program that could mass replace all of them so you don't have to do it manually.
