What are some good Japanese beers, /jp/? Preferably something I could actually find in California.

>> No.5441675

Yebisu is pretty good.

Personally, I'm a fan of Kirin.

It's not the best, and to be honest, it nearly tastes exactly like Natural Ice. But, it was the sort of shit that I like.

Also, it's probably the easiest one to find outside of Japan.

Isn't Kirin just American beer marketed to Japanophiles? Pretty sure it says right on the bottle that it's made by Anheuser Busch.

Sapporo when it comes Jappo beers for me.

Don't know how easy they are to get at a typical Asian store. I have an uncle that regularly ships me the stuff.

It may be owned or imported by them, but it isn't made in the USA

Good taste.

OP here, I'm drinking Sapporo right now. It's sold at pretty much all major grocery stores in California from what I can tell. It's pretty decent, but not amazing.

The same could be said of all beers.

Asahi? But I heard it tastes like watered shit.

Most of the major Japanese beers are just like Bud, Miller, and Coors in the USA. Mass marketed and enjoyed by many. There is nothing wrong with that, I usually go for my homebrew, but I like a Coors Light once in a while.

The Hitachino Nest White Ale is pretty good, IMO. Strong coriander, orange, and ginger flavors. Pretty hard to justify at $5/bottle, though.

OP here, Asahi is shit. Pure shit. Leaves a funny taste in your mouth all day and isn't satisfying at all.

Japan does a lot of things well, but beer isn't one of them.

Is PBR the shit with rockabilly/hipster-analogues over there?

>> No.5441915

>>5441790
PBR isn't the cheapest beer anymore. It's more of a hipster cred thing, even though Schlizt and the like are cheaper.

Anon speaks truth. Though their generic stuff is always, in my experience, as good or better than our typical macrobrew stuff.

...though I hear that when the cans make it to the US mainland they've been mistreated by temperature changes so much they're usually 'skunked' or whatnot. <shrug>

I can't think of a Japanese beer I particularly liked that wasn't from a mini brewery in Japan.

A friend of mine used to have a joke about Japanese beers in the supermarket. He'd buy whichever can had the best poetry on the label. (Enjoy the refreshing taste of springtime hops in a can!) or something like that; there were so many...
