I was wondering, why is there such a strong obsession with little girls in japanese culture? Is there an actual reason?

Patriarchal society. Japan always has been and continues to be one of the lowest ranked nations for woman's rights and salaries. Of course, women have some control and power. The house is their domain and they do most of the shopping. But the ideal woman stays at home and tends to her husband.

The 2nd is also a very clear emphasis on childhood and adulthood. It's a very black and white distinction in Japanese society. Childhood is treasured for its innocence from the working world.

So when you've got women and children commodities, lolis are the natural outgrowth.
