How do you make a rational choice when you have the possibility to go for two different waits that look almost exactly the same, probability wise (for example because the wall doesn't give you enough information yet)? Let's not think about points, let's say you need to win the round no matter what. For me, that's almost like flipping a coin in the air, I don't like this kind of situations in Mahjong, that definitely goes inside the "luck" part of the game, imo.

Picture related, what would you discard.

Nobody is gonna throw the dora out, if you were given a choice between 1p or 5p, most people will discard 1p.
Unless you are going for score, 14P is the common wait.

>> No.6063850

>>6063822
If you discard the 2 pin for the dual pon wait, there are two each of the 5 and 3 pin for you to wait on, four tiles in all, and it's entirely possible that someone else has pairs of those they won't let go. If you throw out the 3 pin, you've got seven possible winning tiles (minus the dora indicator.)

Tell me if I'm missing something, but I'd discard the 3 pin. Then again, it's early in the round so you could probably wait and hope for the 5 pin for an extra dora.

>> No.6063858

>>6063836
>>6063850

Well, maybe this wasn't a good example because the dora wait is a 5, which is a middle tile, and because there are indeed 3 more winning tiles with the ryanmen, and when you think a little bit about it, the ryanmen is definitely what you would go for.

But the point about choosing between two similar-looking waits still stands.

>>6063820
The ryanmen is the better choice here. You're much more likely to win with it (7 winning tiles as opposed to 4), and waiting shanpon for a 3/5 Pin is unlikely because no one is going to throw out the dora if they can help it. Furthermore, with or without another 5 Pin, your hand is going to be a Mangan, so there's not much point in going for the more unlikely wait.

>> No.6064008

>>6063986
I know, like I said, I chose the wrong example (it happened a short while ago, that's the only reason why I used it).

My point wasn't to analyse this particular case, just to ask how you guys reacted when you were in a situation where it was difficult to choose between two similar waits.

But in fact, now that a think about it, it's kind of a silly question, there's always a reason behind choosing a wait or another, no matter what. So let's forget about this.

What the hell, no. They are the best way to lure the opponents who use too much the suji discards during betaori (ie for example 2s and 8s are in the opponents pond, there can't be a ryanmen wait on the 5s so I'm discarding it).

Most people don't resort to shanpon for that, though. They usually discard a middle tile and wait closed or edge for another. IE, going tenpai with 246 Pin, dealing the 6 Pin and declaring a Riichi, while waiting on a closed 3 Pin.

It's not like all of the wait types don't have a proper use, but shanpon is pretty awful for anything other than bonus tiles and Suu/San An Kou/Toi Toi. That's what I think he was getting at, anyway.

No they don't.
Making cheap hand when you are last and 20k behind the leader is retarded. It is like they dont even try and is content with ronning or tsumoing whenever they can.
Keeping a cheap hand in tenpai and then playing into someone else mangan hand is the icing on the cake.

I have played with much more skilled people in 3p in 7447. I am not being sarcastic, most of the 3p players in here actually know how to play safe.

>> No.6128700

>>6128640
>20k behind the leader
Depending on the points of the other players, winning cheap hands is better than not winning at all.

3P has less tiles and less players. This has two consequences:
1. The chance for a tile in your hand to be the one someone else needs is higher.
2. The hands of the other players are easier to read.
Therefore, defending is easier and more important. Taking risks is encouraged more in 4p than 3p.

Also note that people in 3P also win with cheap hands. They are just worth more because of the higher chance of dora.
