Installing Skins:
1: Find your tank in your game folder (Default C:\Games\World_of_Tanks_closed_Beta\res\vehicles)
2: Have .dds supported image editing software (Gimp or CS5 with Nvidia plugin)
3: BACK UP YOUR .DDS'S
4: Apply the decals to tankname.dds, then make the image half the size, and copy all the edits to tankname_SM.dds, and make all your edits completely black to prevent intense shine on them.

To get rid of the russian red star/etc decals that will pop up ontop of your Touhous, you need to replace the graffiti_stickers.dds with one that has them blanked out.

Try to not be in the first attacking wave. Follow them, but not to closely. If there are artilleries or you can't ensure the kill, don't stay still and fire on the move. The bushes can hide you while you move.

If you're using the loltractor, after a few rounds you'll be able to research/max your gun. At that point you can camp your base while hiding in a bush and be fairly effective at dealing with anyone rushing you.

If you score a hit, your dudes inside the tank will tell you, penetrating hit or not.
Don't shoot at the red markers. Shoot at the tanks below the red markers. If you score a penetrating hit, that red marker will shine white for a second. If your shot ricocheted or otherwise failed to penetrate, it will go black.
Dead tanks, allied or not, will have a black marker on top of them.

-Don't charge in without support. If there are heavier tanks with you, let them lead the charge. They can take the damage better than you can.
Know whether or not the enemy knows where you are. If the enemy has artillery and you're spotted, you had best be behind a sturdy wall or moving quickly. Actually, you should be doing that anyway because a stationary or unprotected target is a dead target.
-Scouting is as much about avoiding the enemy as finding them. If you charge in close to where the enemy are, you make an easier target than if you're skirting their position 400m away. You shouldn't be charging in to scout unless there are no other targets for your artillery to shoot at. If the arty are already shooting something, scouting only throws away your tank.
-Don't engage tanks that are significantly higher tier than you unless you have terrain or position advantage. You will get in fights where the enemy has tanks several tiers higher than yours. When you do, avoid them unless you're behind them and/or can use the terrain to your advantage, Otherwise focus on the tanks on the other team that are around or below your tier.

Off the top of my head at least. The "Knowing if your enemy knows where you are" one takes the most practice. It does take a while to learn all of the tanks, their strengths and weaknesses, and how best to adjust your strategy to each map and team compositions.

This is especially important if you're playing TD, as TDs can really get huge camo bonuses when stationary in a bush.

I'd say as a good rule of thumb, if you even think that you might have been spotted, move. It's better to get to a different spot than have an artillery shell rain down on your head and thing "dammit, should have moved."

There isn't much "penalty" for a false alarm. You've just moved to a different spot, that's all.

Also, when you spot someone as a TD and hit them, watch their turret & movement closely- if they start to turn their turret towards you, they see you (duh!) and you should take the appropriate evasive maneuvers.
The dead giveaway that they don't know where the shit you are is if they just start backing up in a straight line or sweep their turret from side to side... Less savvy players might expose their tracks/side, too, giving you a prime shot.

Remember, de-tracking someone for a heavy or your artillery to finish off might not get you "points on the board" but it is immensely helpful to your team.

Furthermore, take advantage of distracted players! That tank that's preoccupied with killing your arty? That heavy in the midst of battle with a teammate of yours? Use their distraction to get in there, hit them, and get out. I've killed more than a fair share of heavies this way. If you can't penetrate, though, just move on.

You don't necessarily show up- it's just a higher chance. Numerous times people have complained of taking fire from "invisible enemies."

As far as I can tell the heirarchy of "obviousness" or how likely you are to be detected goes like this:

-stopped, in a bush
-stopped, no cover
-stopped, in a bush- firing your weapon
-stopped, no cover- firing your weapon
-moving
-moving and shooting

from smallest detection radius to largest.

Now, don't take this as a fact because I'm just making educated guesses based on playing. This is just my take on it!

Let's just say your "view range" is 350m. Now, you'd imagine that this would mean there is a bubble 350m around you where you will detect enemy tanks. I don't think it works this way, though...

Instead, imagine that in their default state, 350m view means all enemies have a bubble around them at 350 meters- if you get within that radius, you detect them. However, there are modifiers for camo, which allows enemies to make that area smaller and smaller, by not moving about, hiding in a bush, and holding their fire. The smaller they make that radius, the closer you have to get to them before detection.

for example, my TD in a bush
350 is your detection radius
-50 m for being in the bush (I'm pulling numbers out of my ass here, but bear with me.)
-25 m for standing still
-25 m for my camo net

So, then, theoretically my "bubble" of detection is down to 250m.

You can also make my detection radius smaller by *you* moving- so, say, down to 225m
or I can make my radius larger by shooting at you, like, up to 275m.

A different base view range would modify these values accordingly.

Makes sense to me, at least.

Protips:

If you get too the "memory error, texture quality set to medium/low" or something, restart the game. It's a bug or the game doesn't handle the memory correctly (it's a 32 bits game after all). I have 8 GB of ram and it never used all of it.


Forest grounds gives another bonus of camouflage. They appear in brown on the minimap, they are surrounded with trees/bushes and usually slows your movement. This is a theory, this is what I think.

There is a method to my madness, you lead the charge because you where the only one on our team that could penetrate the 6 king tigers they had. We needed you out and kicking ass.

I was thinking about having you stay back and defend, but then we would all go out and die and you would be alone and overrun. I decided to have the lower tier TD's stay back because they could deal with the scouts and medium tanks with less armor.

Also, you are big and slow. It would be hard for you to do much if they got to the base and started running circles around you.

Our two Tiger's could penetrate as well, but really we were all German tanks.. We had no real tank to lead the charge as German tanks are best at sniping, the charges are usually lead by Russian tanks or if the German tank is a King Tiger or higher. The Tiger's don't have enough armor to lead an assault, so you were really our only hope for offensive.

I really saw no way out of it, If we went forward we would be reamed by their King Tiger's, and if we sat and camped we would be reamed by their superior artillery.

My estimated results if we camped were we took out the scouts, a King Tiger, a T-44 or two, and then we die. That is assuming the King Tiger's actually attack instead of having the T-44's be in there to spot us all for the artillery.

For tanks that are about equal to you in Tier, you want to use AP. Your HE won't penetrate their armor and won't do as much damage as an AP round will to them.

For EVERYTHING else, HE. If the tank is smaller than you, like a light tank or an open topped TD or Arty, HE kills better than anything else. If they are superheavies, your AP isn't going to penetrate most of the time, and they will just bounce off. Against those strong targets that you find your AP can't hurt at all, use HE. It won't do much damage, but it will at least do something, and that is better than nothing. You'll also find that you are getting lots of critical hits on them while shooting them with HE.

With the L48, you'd be better off sneaking around and shooting heavies in the sides while they are distracted by your own heavies. Stay in trees and bushes, watch them approach, and then nail them.

Make sure you get some HE shells for your gun. If you can't penetrate armor HE will still do damage. You can switch ammo types by pressing 1 or 3 twice. I like to have 70% AP ammo and 30% HE, in case I come across something I can;t hurt with HE

HE does lots of damage, but it cannot penetrate much. AP is always better if you can penetrate their armor. HE is good for crippling other tanks by shooting their tracks and blowing them up, immobilizing them. You can also damage their radios, guns, turrets and engines. Sooner or later you are going to be put in battles with large heavy tanks you can't penetrate. HE is good because you can use your speed to rush in, cripple them, rush out and have your artillery finish them off.

Just make sure to upgrade your luchs to the 5cm gun. Upgrading the tracks and engine can get it up to 60km/h

Yes, perfectly normal. You'll eventually nail KVs for up to 20~25% with the upgraded gun though.
With the fully upgraded gun for the su-5, it'll be very, very often to hear "It went right through" and only see 10% decrease in health for anything heavier than a leopard.
The su-26 fares better in matches than the su-5 since it gets placed more often into lower tier matches, where its free-rotating turret is godlike against stuff lighter than a lee and formidable against lees.
And hey, at least you're nailing the bastards fine. Better artillery such as the grille, wespe and M37 with the M4 howizer actually have trouble focusing on target - the circle gets fuckhuge inbetween targets and leading doesn't work nearly as well. Actually the 2nd time I did it, although the first time most of them were really killsteals. Both times were on Lakeville, which is an arty-restricting map, but both times I was actually in a very targetable area, I was just sniping from too far to be seen. It can be very frustrating though when you get no help from your team, making it easy for lights to swarm you.

Marder's 76mm can two-shot most lights (leopards are your bane though, their sloped armor can bounce your shots sometimes and you won't get another chance before they're behind you, even if you penetrate they'll take 3-4 hits), switching to HE you can one-shot low tier arty across the map if someone lights it up for you. You have to be really careful if anyone gets close to you if enemy arty is alive though, likewise if any tier 5s have a clear line on you, or you're getting 1HKO'd by HE.

I've actually never gotten more than 5 kills on any other vehicle (Pz3 and Wespe have done it once or twice)

What I hate is almost TK'ing people who decide that the best course of action is to park DIRECTLY in front of a Tank Destroyer that is actively firing upon an enemy. Someone already told me that, and it's true. Camouflage on jTigers is fucked up.
I was taking it easy on the bushed while a jTiger killed me. I couldn't see him. He could see me while I was hiding, stationary.

Had the most hilarious game just now. I get absolutely reamed in the beginning and drop low, then an IS shoots me with his last right and puts me to 52 health. What follows is after killing the IS I go on to kill a whole 7 other tanks almost alone(Had a T29 who helped with one but died) This includes a King Tiger who was at 73% when I was still at 52 health.

A Stug III caught me at the end when I fired on the King Tiger to kill it--but he was out of ammo and was kinda pushing against me in a futile attempt to kill me.

All they really had to do was fire at my puny 100mm armor turret, but I guess they were too concentrated on trying to finally get me dead to think of that.

Eh, the Churchill isn't that bad. It counts as Tier 5, so you have a chance of getting slotted into low-level games where most people can't really hurt you. Add that the 6-pounder is quite accurate and has a superb rate of fire and you're a menace any light tank, SPG or medium below ~T6.

Also, the Churchill is dirt cheap to repair and rearm, meaning that it will net you winning pretty much no matter how bad you do.

I wonder if it has the same weakness in-game as early real-life Panther models. Basically the Allies discovered that if you shot at the underside of the gun mantle, and it failed to penetrate, the round would ricochet downwards through the thin top armor. Later model Panthers changed the gun mantle so rounds would ricochet up or be stopped. Perhaps somebody's aim is good enough to test the game mechanics?

That's a myth. The same as the American myth that "the entire German army was made of Tigers" because every time the Shermans got into combat with the Germans, they reported fighting Tigers, even though they were only fighting Stugs and Pz IVs.

If a round hit the mantle, here's what would happen:
Velocity of the round, the number one factor in whether or not it penetrates, would be GREATLY reduced upon impact with the armor, even if it bounced. Maybe if it was as weak as a Sherman, it might still penetrate, but the Panther is no slouch on armor.
Also, the shape of the warhead, that helps it to penetrate the armor, would be deformed upon impact, making it very unlikely that it strikes at a good angle to go through the armor.

If it really did happen, it was the most insane luck. Chances of it actually happening? Almost none. Especially with the shitty anti tank guns the vast majority of the US army was using. The rounded mantles used on Panthers, T-34s, and late King Tigers were designed with the possibility of downward deflection in mind. It doesn't go through. The Germans actually kept the rounded Panther mantel on the turret until the end of the war. The flat front turret you see in the game is not a historical modification, it was an experimental one based off of the early King Tiger turret, where they tried to downsize it to fit one on a Panther and put a bigger gun in it. The flat mantle is only because the turret they were modifying was based on the early KT turret, not because they were afraid of rounds deflecting into the top armor and killing the tank.

What myth? It's well known that the lower mantle formed a shot trap. The Germans added a "chin" to cope with deflections but due to production pressure then manufactured both types of mantles. The experimental turret you talk about was meant for the Panther II. It's also well known that tank top armor is invariable much weaker than frontal and side armor, and usually weaker than the rear armor. So few shells strike the top that it makes little sense to add tons of weight for that rare eventuality.

The tank company led by Captain Radley-Walters in Normandy is well known for having knocked out several Panthers this way. He does make it sound like it was easy, but in reality gunners would aim for weak spots and pepper the Panther in the hopes of one shell achieving that critical hit. Panthers are so tough from the front there's little choice in where to aim your gun. You aim for that 10-20% chance because anywhere else is 1%.

It varies somewhat gun to gun (There are guns where the AP is effectively useless, and others where the HE is effectively useless), but in general if the AP can penetrate the armor without over-penetrating, it will do more damage than HE. This generally means that tanks at or somewhat below your level are the best targets for AP, while tanks well above or below your tier are better targets for HE.
