Is it just me or is everyone forgetting how Eva (as Eva-Beatice) took over Beato's role as the witch responsible for the mass murders in order to conceal the true events on rokkenjima?

I mean one of the central themes in Umineko is how the 'Black Witch' can be used as a way of taking the responsibility away from the ACTUAL culprit by blaming something supernatural/non-existant. Take Natsuhi for instance, Beato attempted to comfort her by saying SHE was the one responsible for making her throw the baby of the cliff, Maria too, as she tries to rationalize her mom's occasional violent behavior.

Now if you look at Eva, why do you think she was so determined to hide the truth of the events on Rokkenjima island from everyone almost to the point where she has become the accepted culprit in the eyes of the public?

The chances are that she made the realization that SOMEONE she cared very deeply for was BEHIND the mass murders and took it upon herself to stop at nothing to conceal it.

Why did Shannon/Beato/Yasu make herself the culprit?

I think at first she indeed really cared for Ange and decided not tell her the truth. Then she gradually began to hate her, as Ange continued to demand the truth and blame her for killing her family. In her latter years she hid the truth from Ange out of spite, just like she said in a hospital.

You're misunderstanding it. It's no "Eva-Batman", Eva was as much of a bitch as Kyrie or any of the adults, hell she would probably rank #1. But she does put a lot of enphasis in parenting and conceals the truth so Ange doesn't have to deal with it. Of course things don't go as she had hoped and later they develop a hatefull relationship- the reason she didn't reveal anything when Ange was old enough to take it might have been more out of spite.

Anyway, Eva was in fact Ange's #1 ally after the Rokkenjima accident.
